  • ^^ @Ginge - you'll need to repost the link to your card!
  • I believe we made it!!
  • Now it's a right proper contest!!!
  • By my count I believe we've met the requirements to add that special additional prize to first place. The first place winner will now get 1 year of the $5/month level Patreon rewards for Cardsmith paid for in their name! If the winner happens to already have it, they will be allowed to choose another user to get the reward.

The contest is still open and accepting entries until Oct 23rd! If you haven't entered yet, try for you chance to win a whole lot of cool things by stomping on those nasty Eldrazi.
  • Was I Smith #40? :D
Anyways, I'm back with my full post, all three of my entries...
Here's my first entry before, for clarification...

    And here's the other two...
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/purge-hedron?list=user
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/rahnkar-eldrazi-bane?list=user
  • I decided to set the requirement to 30 unique cardsmiths since the community is still growing and some people like Eldrazi enough not to want to create cards specifically to play against them.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of MTG and I think this site helps promote the kind of creative thinking and community support the game deserves so I wanted to make a contest to help support the site. I love coming up with ideas for neat (or silly/stupid) cards and being able to quickly and easily turn it into a 'real' card that I can share with my friends and fellow enthusiasts. Not only that, but the site devs have been adding a ton of cool stuff recently and since I'm already a paying patron (and the contest winner will be soon!) I can't wait to see what else they come up with.

Since Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and the other BFZ cards came out, we need something to counteract those OP exiling abilities.

Card #1-also triggers Rally abilities, so this is the best card to have in an ally deck.

    (More coming in!)

Also, @Gelectrode, you missed a quotation mark on your final entry :).

@pattickammons-...and you need a token. Since Cardsmith isn't exactly what I need for this, it's different from named tokens like Ashaya, the Awoken World.

(please note this is not a contest entry.)

THIS is a contest entry, though:
I decided people were mainly focusing on countering the Eldrazi mechanics-what if we could buff some creatures to bring them to the Eldrazi's level?

Tried to keep it balanced while also making it quite powerful against Eldrazi. Hope you like it!
Sorry about using art that's already on a card but it's so perfect, I couldn't resist.
    Coordinated Assault

  • Second entry, a little bit more powerful this time.
    Planar Balance

  • @Corwinnn Is that the threshold? Am I imagining things? Can it truly be?!
  • Two days left, everyone. We have some great entries so far but that doesn't mean you can't still take a shot at some awesome prizes.
  • Entries for this contest are officially closed! I will begin the judging and post again as soon as it is done.
  • IT'S SO EXCITING!

    I'M GONNA EXPLODE!
  • @Corwinnn DON'T DO IT! YOU'LL DESTROY THE ELDRAZI!... Wait a minute... That's cheating! Or is it? Now I'm confused.
  • I just want to say thanks to @strongbelieves for hosting this and offering up such a cool prize! This is a sixty dollar donation that he didn't have to make, and one of you awesome Cardsmiths are going to win it! Good luck!
Here are @strongbelieves cards... Check em out!

  • Ok everyone, judging has begun. It is going to be pretty tough. I've already made my first pass and despite a few cards being a bit OP and a few not quite playing to the theme, there were no entries that I actually disliked.

Also, in my first attempt to get the list down to a 'top 10' I ended up with 25 entries left... There will be a first, second and third place winner and 7 additional cards that I will write about as honorable mentions (in no particular order).
  • Ok, here is the first post of two everyone has been waiting for. I'm going to address the honorable mentions. Please note that these aren't in any particular order:

    Survivor of Bala-Ged
    Oduda
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/survivor-of-bala-ged
This card tackles the main point of the challenge head-on. It is reasonably well-balanced, has a useful ability for snipping the majority of the non-mythic Eldrazi and is still useful even if you aren't using its ability and your opponent doesn't have Eldrazi out. Great in standard or against modern Eldrazi decks, decent sideboard otherwise. This is an excellent entry that only wasn't picked because it was edged out by the fierce competition.

    Vesna, Emeria Arbiter
    Animist
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/vesna-emeria-arbiter-1
This card is damn cool. It might take a reread or two to fully understand how it works but it does something I hadn't really considered before. I could see plenty of standard and modern decks running this and it would be pretty rough for most Eldrazi decks while still being reasonably fair in that it will likely also harm you. This card also has big appeal to me as a steadfast fan of denial human cards. The thing that kept this out of the top 3 though is that it would pretty much ruin most artifact decks out there. Not that I don't think pure colorless decks shouldn't be taken down a peg but it isn't quite focused enough to make the top 3.

    Wrath of Zendikar
    Tomigon
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/wrath-of-zendikar-3?list=set&set=2822
How do you beat down big, stupid Eldrazi that like to exile your cards? Hit them back with big, smart green creatures that bring them back. In addition to being smartly balanced as a creature in general and not half bad in any green deck (combo with Primeval Titan and/or Boundless Realms for a sexy win) it gives you an excellent and balanced tool to use against the exile-happy Eldrazi. This bad boy alone would make anyone think twice about tossing out the BFZ Ulamog. Good art, good flavor, good card, great entry.

    Rahn'Kar, Eldrazi Bane
    Ginge
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/rahnkar-eldrazi-bane?list=user
An ally pretty much specifically for fighting Eldrazi. Good cost-power ratio, good color choice, very useful. This guy would make ally decks pack a nice extra punch against Eldrazi in addition to being useful against them on his own. 4/4 with all of his utility might be a teeny bit much for what you're paying, though, and that's why this didn't quite make it to the top 3.

    Dazia, Angel of Renewal
    RedRageMage
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/dazia-angel-of-renewal?list=user
It is like an anti-Eldrazi Wheel of Sun and Moon mixed with a Combat Medic and fused into badass angel. There's a few wording issues but they do not take away from the coolness or usefulness of this card. It also has the advantage of helping against the white exile cards like PtE in modern. And the art is great. And I would play this even if it didn't prevent exile. All-around good card that has a nice anti-Eldrazi edge to it. Take THAT, Ulamog!

    Coordinate Assault
    Linjam
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/coordinated-assault-1
A card that uses allies that isn't an ally? I don't know if that's what Wizards intended (there is one other card that kind of does something similar...) but the effects of this card were too good for this contest to not get an honorable mention. Take out the Eldrazi runts using your allies or use some combined ally might to bring down the big ones. Simple, useful and balanced considering the cost. Add the fact that it has some nice flavor and you came very close to getting in the top 3.

    Fill With the World
    MtgSalvader
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/fill-with-the-world
I find the name confusing but this card definitely deserves an honorable mention. Kind of like Tomigon's Wrath of Zendikar, you can get yourself a nice big green meanie to stomp out those damn Eldrazi, which your flavor text reflects perfectly. This didn't quite make it because a 12/13 with trample for 8cmc seemed a bit too powerful, especially considering you can put it on a spare land and swing the same turn if you want or a creature if you feel like it. Even so, this card practically screams 'Zendikar kicking Eldrazi ass' so it needed the honorable mention.

And now the final post, the winners of the contest:
    3rd Place
    Druid of Tomorrows
    @NickZilla02
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/druid-of-tomorrows
This card was one tweak away from taking first place. If the first ability was "Landfall - Creatures you control gain protection from colorless until end of turn." instead of just a flat ability, it would have been perfect. As it stands, blanket colorless immunity to all of your creatures is a bit much for 4cmc. That being said, this card gets all of the rest of it right. The art is great, the first ability is darn close and the second ability is useful and intelligent and it helps you in a way that is tangible but not overpowered against Eldrazi, particularly against new new BFZ devoids and 1/1 critters mass attacking. It really makes Eldrazi players have to hold out and only swing occasionally with their big bads or risk giving you a serious power boost and make it easier to fight them and it does that without outright preventing them from attacking or disabling them. Being able to change someone's mind without countering or disabling them is exactly the sort of cards I like to see.

As a reward, I'll make a trophy card for you based on your favorite creature type or deck type. Congratulations!

    2nd Place
    Pristine Arbiter
    @fabiocbinbutter
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/pristine-arbiter
I have no idea how to pronounce your username. There's a few wording issues with this card and it could probably use another {1} in its mana cost but I think you managed to do something I have never seen Wizards able to do fairly and given how much I play modern, something I wish they would do badly. You figured out a way to beat down excess ramp and trick summoning without being unfair about it. One of the worst things about Eldrazi is how many annoying, unfair ways there are to summon them without paying their full, insane mana costs. No one who plays Eldrazi or packs an Emra in their deck waits 15 turns and plays 15 lands before dropping that sucker. Same goes for most colorless cards with more than 10cmc. It seems so simple, when you think about it. You have to be able to pay for a card properly to play it. Forcing people to pay for their massive Eldrazi properly is a fair and awesome way to counter the massive and anti-fun value:cost ratios they have. Not only that, but this card would be everywhere in modern WU to handle the endless trick summoning and reanimation decks. Kudos on an exemplary card. Picking between this and the 1st place winner was not an easy choice.

As a reward, pick a favorite card of yours that you've made and I'll make you a special trophy that would synergize/combo with it. Congratulations!

    1st Place
    Defiant Mountaineer
    @TheCopyrightContinuum
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/defiant-mountaineer?list=user
When I started this contest I figured I'd probably end up picking some super, game-winning, Eldrazi-smashing behemoth that let you tap and put all Eldrazi cards in all enemy decks into a paper shredder as the winner. Your submission was one of the few uncommons that actually got submitted and the only one that made it into the top 10. A menace 2/4 ally for {1}{r}{r}. Neat, seems pretty smart for a warrior card and about right for an uncommon. Gains double strike when your opponent has multiple colorless creatures? Now it is an Eldrazi threat. Given the fact that everything and their grandmother spawns those colorless 1/1 tokens (or 0/1 tokens), this guy with menace is pretty much made to be a minion-sweeper while still having potentially enough fight for some of the bigger ones. I would consider this a very good BFZ uncommon that is not overpowered. In fact, one of the reasons I picked this card is because of how easily I could see it being a real card and the fact that it isn't makes me sad. Most people came to the contest with rares and mythics and the most off-the-wall creative abilities and effects. You brought out one of the smartest cards I've seen at uncommon power. It is useful in so many ways and for so many reasons and it didn't have to be a game-ender to do it. I would play this card in BFZ standard allies and I'm not even a huge fan of red.

As a reward, I'll make you a trophy card to any specifications you want (type, theme, etc) and I'll figure out some way to name a legendary angel or demon in the set I'm working on after you. ...Oh, and you also will get a year of the $5/month Patreon rewards for Cardsmith paid for by me and all of the super mega cool bonuses that go with it.

All of the winners, please contact me via private message on these forums to provide the info I need to make you/get you your prizes. This was a great contest. There were even 5 or so cards that I went around and made lengthy comments on that I liked that didn't quite make it to the honorable mentions. As a final note, all of the creativity and fun from this contest was made possible by the awesome team that brings us this site, MTG Cardsmith. If you aren't already a supporter on Patreon, I suggest you become one. It isn't that expensive, you get some cool new features and you help make sure we all get more site-sponsored contests and new developments. Here is the link: https://www.patreon.com/mtgcardsmith
