Here are the results (First some stats)… 69% of entries were acceptable within the color pie. 69% of entries were acceptable or borderline commons for a standard legal set. 50% of entries were BOTH.
5th Place: @TenebrisNemo with Lancing Boggart [86 Pts]
This card has a strong flavor connection with lorwyn, which justifies the goblin creature type in R/B. I like how the abilities feel connected with the flavor. What stopped it from scoring higher was its complexity. Dreadful requires 1) Tracking Lancing Boggart’s toughness and 2) Tracking your blocking creatures’ power as a whole. Compared to Skulk, which was considered a failed experiment, this is even more complex. I think this card is a borderline common on complexity (the rate is probably on the stronger side but perfectly fine). Overall, this design is strong though. You get 1 favorite of your choice.
4th Place: @sorinjace with Sentry Centaur [87 pts]
This card’s name implies vigilance, and the card delivers. It is in color pie for both colors and a good, clean, simple execution. Green and white both like square stats, so making it a 3/3 for 3 is appropriate. My one criticism is that it should probably cost 1HH rather than HHH. HHH is just too hard to cast in limited outside of monocolor decks or G/W decks, and generally a G/W hybrid cards should be able to be played in either G/x or W/x decks. Great job! This card’s ability plays into something that both red and black typically want to do: Attack and deal damage. Technically, red doesn’t get life loss and black does get damage so the ability would have been better worded as “deal 2 damage” but this is a minor tweak. Also, red typically doesn’t get flying outside of dragons/phoenixes, but because hybrid cards often accommodate color pie bends I think this is acceptable if pushing the envelope a little bit. This design is cool and while it has its flaws, this card really feels like a B/R hybrid card. Nice design! You get 3 favorites of your choice.
This card is a great exploration of new hybrid space. Although it typically cares about power X or less, black can certainly care about toughness X or less. To differentiate it from black, red doesn’t get destroy effects, HOWEVER the functional difference between destroying a creature with toughness 2 or less and dealing 2 damage to a creature with toughness 2 or less is very minimal. I think this card is a bend in red, but hybrid cards often accept bends out of necessity and the creativity and novelty of this card really pushed it over the top. Great design! You get 4 favorites of your choice.
1st Place: @Faiths_Guide with Staunch Clansmen [96 pts]
The name and the ability all connect with this card for a great flavor win. The base body is typical for both red and green, and the Pledged ability seems to have the right balance between how difficult it is to fulfill and the reward. +1/+1 and Trample is a perfect ability for G/R. Overall, this card has great flavor, fits the color pie, has the right power level for limited, and feels like an archetype reward while also just being a curve filler in non-legendary focused decks. Awesome design! You get 5 favorites of your choice!
