    @Potato13
Psylian life allows you to cast your cards with Discover. Masterwork is focused on combat-relevant abilities so it helps you connect and trigger Elated. Discover allows you to change your Masterwork or trigger Elated as a combat trick. The synergies are there but they're sometimes subtler. It allows the set to be more varied, you can still care about something else than the main theme if you don't feel like it, that's also an important balance to get.

For Masterwork, keep in mind that there's a bit of paraticism in this mechanic: it plays better if you open at least 3 cards with it, so you can re-assign your Masterwork in a strategic way. So you can't tone it down too low.
  • Alright, with that explanation it sounds better. I might try to make a few of the more "Pack-Filler" commons that every set has.
  • As in, commons that don't use the set's mechanics.
  • @ningyounk
I love where you ended up taking masterwork, and I believe that it is the absolute best place the mechanic could have ended as.

I am sorry for misreading discover. I completely missed the 'may' clause! My favorite mechanics are usually ones that smooth draws, and I think this does that perfectly.

Anyway, I absolutely love where the set is now. Keep up the fantastic work!
  • @ningyounk
This set seems like it will need the ability to flicker permanents at each rarity. It will allow for strategic masterwork assignment at times where you want to or where your previous one has died and you no card to make a new one. Also, if you have instant speed versions, it could become a powerful combat trick.

Since your wording allows for any card type to have masterwork, I think it should be tagged on (basically for free) on some instants and sorceries in the set. Had you intended this?
  • @Faiths_Guide
At common, I figured it would be a bit confusing. Masterwork can create complicated board states so after several attempts I realised the "Sliver" version was the more easy-to-grasp way to do it. I did put a slight blink theme in white/blue (in the latest version, I'm experimenting with a Faerie Tribal archetype with blink, flash, and ETB abilities, not unlike Spirits of Innistrad). But mostly if you want to reassign your Masterwork, you need to play the creature cards in the current version I have.

    @Potato13
If you're interested in making pack-filler cards, here's a list of reprints I used to fill in my current set skeleton until I got better ideas. We'll probably use a few actual reprints to anchor the set in reality, but certainly not that many. So, if you have ideas to execute those staples in a slightly different ways, preferentially that synergise with the set themes, here are the most needed effects right now: (They cannot have set mechanics, and preferentially would not gain life for as-fan reasons, but any other way to make a new card out of old ones is fair game, even just finding numbers that never got used yet.)

Here's some notes on each slot, what exactly is needed:
    - Dub: A White enchantment that gives first strike to a creature since I don't have a first striker in White.
    - Charge: A spell that boosts your team.
    - Disenchant: An enchantment removal.
    - Deep Freeze: A removal card that's an enchantment.
    - Disperse: A bounce spell
    - Brilliant Plan: An instant or sorcery that draws you at least two cards and costs 4 or more mana. Ideally, it would allow you to control the top card of your library, to synergise with Discover.
    - Cancel: An unconditional counterspell.
    - Negate: A soft counterspell.
    - Dive Down: A pump spell that can protect your Masterwork.
    - Dead Weight: A removal card that's an enchantment, ideally it wouldn't specifically be effective against creatures with 2 or less toughness like Dead Weight since I already have a spell that deals 2 damage to creatures in black as well.
    - Macabre Waltz: A creature recuperation effect.
    - Act of Treason: A temporary stealing effect.
    - Brute Strength: A pump spell that's 1 or two mana.
    - Adventurous Impulse: A filtering card that can get you a land. Could also work with creatures. It needs to be 1 mana for Discover purposes. It would also be helpful if it let you know what the next card of your library is.
    - Root Snare: A Fog effect.
    - Evolving Wilds: A land that fixes your mana.

Aditionally, here are the archetypes I'm trying right now:
    - WU Control Faerie Tribal (ETB abilities, blink, flash, etc.)
    - UB Control (Classic archetype.)
    - BR Aggro Suicide (Use your life as a fuel to be super agressive.)
    - RG Aggro Go Tall (Classic Archetype)
    - GW Midrange Psylian Fortress (Gain psylian life then try to keep it.)
    - WB Midrange Symmetry (Use group hugs and chaos strategies to get ahead in ressources.)
    - UR Disruptive Aggro Masterwork (Make a big evasive Masterwork)
    - BG Combo Multicolor Ramp (Get access to all colors, uses Convergence-like effects.)
    - RW Disruptive Aggro Elated (Keep the pressure by turning on Elated every turn.)
    - GU Combo Discover Tempo (Get the full power of the Discover mechanic.)

I like where most of them are though they still need some polish, but I'm still struggling to find the right archetypes in WB and GB since they all share the Psylian life mechanics but I don't want those to be too focused on life while still getting incidentally synergistic. The WB Symmetry has some group life gain/loss effects that could allow it to care about the number of player that gained/lost life this turn etc. While the BG archetype could take advantage of the fact that psylian life can add any color to care about number of colors.

Thrilled for the ongoing progress on this set! Are you doing any playtest activities or is that mostly 'in-house?' Also, what's the best way to submit ideas should we come across them?

@ningyounk those look good for reprints! My other suggestions for new commons and reprints are as follows:

    White:
1W 2/1 that has "W: First Strike until end of turn"
2WW 3/4 with Vigilance and, when it attacks, tap target creature an opponent controls.
1W Instant with "Creatures you control gain +1/+0 until end of turn. If this wasn't cast from your hand, draw a card."

    Blue:
    3B 3/4.
3BB 5/3 with "Tap: Gains Hexproof until end of turn."
1BB Counterspell with "Counter target spell. If you tapped two or less lands for this card, draw a card."

    Black:
B Aura with "1B, sacrifice this aura: Target player reveals their hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card." (A cheaper cost Distress for discover.)
    3B 3/3 with Menace.
BB Sorcery with "Each player loses 3 life, discards a card then sacrifices a creature." (Smallpox but for Elated.)

    Red:

3R Sorcery with "Destroy target land or artifact. If it was a Masterwork, deal 2 damage to it's controller."
1R 1/1 with Unblockable and Prowess.
Lava Jet reprint, can help set up Discover.

    Green:
    2G 3/3
1G 2/1 with "When this enters the Battlefield, discover." (Elvish Visionary but Discover)
    Primal Huntbeast Reprint.

    Artifacts:
Syvolk Life-Staff (Cheap for Discover, triggers Exalted)

    More uncommon/rare cards:
4GG 5/6 with "When this enters the battlefield, you may destroy up to one target creature with flying and up to one artifact."
    Essence Extraction
    Selkie Hedge-Mage
    Tavern Swindler
  • @DomriKade
Well, my plan was to do the first few iterations "sneakily" alone to see where it led me and then start a new conversation from here, but since the cat is out of the bag I think I'm just going to make a few more modifications and publish the new thread early xD This way everyone can discuss actual cards and playtest freely ^^
  • @ningyounk
When you need Untap friends for some matches, hit me up!
  • @ningyounk some of the black common creatures in your concept account don't have power and toughness...
  • @LyndonF
Oh thanks, good catch! Thankfully, I bought a month of premium on this account so I could handle the set skeleton more easily in this kind of situations x)
  • @ningyounk
    I left some comments ;)
