The Callback Challenge-CLOSED
A reprint from Core Set 2020 got me thinking: Lotus Vale (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=lotus+vale.) The card is an obvious callback to the infamous Black Lotus. It got me thinking about cards that are callbacks to other cards mechanically. So...
The goal of this challenge is to create an obvious callback card. Your entree must include your card and the old card. Here are some guidelines and rules:
-Your new card must obviously be related, but it can be related in any way. You could change up the colors or general mechanics, just make sure that the cards are similar mechanically
-Your new card shouldn't be an exact copy, however. I want to see some innovation. The cards should be similar, not the same
-You are allowed up to 3 entrees
-I'll leave an example in the comments to guide you if you are confused
As for prizes...
1st- 4 favorites of your choice
2nd- 3 favorites of your choice
3rd- 1 favorite and I will favorite your winning entrees
I'll be checking this thread daily and ending the challenge late July 14th. Have fun!

Are those cards callbacks to lightning strike and giant growth? I don't know what the last one is referencing either. But on an unrelated note, Bend is a genius mechanic in my opinion. I would love to see cards for it sometime. Do you mind if I try using it on a card and credit you in the comments of the card?
And please feel free to use it! This is the general formatting of it right now:
Bend -- You may spend colored mana as though it were mana of any color to pay colored mana of Cardname's casting cost. If you do, [negative effect].
The negative effect is intended as being something very on-color for the cards normal color. So black would be sacrificing, discarding, life loss, that kind of thing. And so on for each color. Although it is flexible.
It was difficult to simulate a boardwide tap in red, but I think it works.
Callback to Pegasus Courser

1st place, receiving 4 favorites: @TenebrisNemo
Hard gravity was just so perfect, flavorful, and elegant. It was nice to see a simple card referencing a common still done well. I also appreciate how cold the flavor text is. It was a tough choice, but the simplicity of this card made it stand out.
2nd place, receiving 3 favorites: @riib11
I really liked Time Step giving you the ability to cast permanents and sorceries amid an opponent's turn. It is an awesome commander card and a cool reference to a member of the power 9. Again, simplicity is great. What sets this card apart is it's function. It manges not only to be an effective callback, but a useful card as well.
3rd place, receiving 1 favorite and a favorite for their entree: @Faiths_Guide
Embermare was a really nice callback. To me, it was the perfect balance of new and old. It managed to be unique and also similar to it's older version. I'm also amazed at how you found such perfect art for that card. It has a very similar style to the old Mare.
Antways, thank you all for participating. If you won, leave your cards that you want favorited in the comments. Hope I see ya'll around. Happy Smithing!
