Why Do I Hear Boss Music

  • Well I suppose the time has come to judge this contest. I thank you all for your entries and with this feedback I will most certainly be creating more of these in the future!
    All of the entries definitely fit the theme and this judging process was a lot harder than I expected it to be.

    First, some honorable mentions.
    All 3 of @RohanDragoon's entries were very unique, and had the backstory to back... the story. As it goes, you definitely deserve the bonus points for explaining the stories of the characters. My only problem was the overall balance of the cards and how they would perform in play. The first two seem very powerful, and unbeatable if you resolve them under certain situations. And the third, Kroen, definitely has good effects for her lore, but she seems to counter herself and give a disadvantage where perhaps there shouldn't be one. I don't know what would be done to rebalance, but either way, I love the lore!

    And @Red_Tower's card The Final Encroach. I absolutely love the lore behind this card and I got great joy from reading its effects the first time. My only issue with it is the first effect. Say you resolve it on turn 5, with 5/6 cards in hand. You discard those cards, destroy all of your opponent's lands and perhaps a nonland as well. This would also be broken with effects that are personally very happy with you discarding all those cards. Nevertheless, really cool concept!

    Now for the top 3.

    In 3rd place, we have Dai, Decider of Good and Evil by @TenebrisNemo! The third place slot was especially hard to designate, but this card really stuck out to me. I don't quite know how balanced it is in context but I suppose that's true for any number of these cards. Even so, its effect is quite unique and would definitely put a fun spin on a game. It also fits the idea of a deity quite well!

    In 2nd place, Shub-Niggurath by @RayearthIX! I spent a good five minutes staring at this card and working out how exactly it would work. I think that it really fits the theme of large black/green creatures, using examples of The Gitrog Monster and Doomgape. All in all, I think that the power of the card is definitely balanced by itself, and you encapsulated the idea of the Lovecraftian horror in one easy-to-understand concept!

    And in 1st, I designate Spasmagister, Polluted Soul by @AlexWright. There is so much I can say about this card, and I'll try my best to say most of what's on my mind. When it was first submitted, I kept it in the back of my mind, theorycrafting its effect as I went through whatever I was doing at the time. It really fits the theme of a boss, how the heroes would be taking the sacrifice to eventually bring him down. As a functioning card, I think he (he?) would find a place as a fun buildaround commander. Not too broken, dies to removal, but a very unique effect that would certainly bring an exciting twist to any game!

    As said, Alex chooses three cards to be favourited, Rayearth chooses two, and Tenebris chooses one. I'll also be favouriting all of the cards I mentioned in this lecture. And to all of you I say, congratulations!

    @Fyresis

    Thank you very much for the 2nd place finish! I'm glad you liked the card. I recently made another Cthulhu based card if you like Lovecraft.
