  • Final week for entries...

Left it to the last couple days to finally find art, but here is my entry. As ever, if someone knows the artist, let me know and I'll edit the card with the artists name.

Amelie is a knight of the kingdom who has dedicated her life to defending it citizenry from the monsters that roam the land. She is the wielder of the legendary Rose Red Sword, a weapon used across generations to protect people and kill monsters. No matter where it's wielder dies, the weapon is always found by a new one.

    image image

Only the wielders know the true nature of the sword, but none are willing to speak it aloud. They fear that if given voice, they will be shunned due to the truth. The sword is inhabited by an immortal spirit that, in exchange for giving the wielder power, drains their life. Whether that fear is their own, or passed to them by the spirit, they have no way to tell. The fear is not unfounded, however, as the world is one in which humans (and elves, dwarves, etc.) live in walled towns and cities, and wherever there are no living people, massive forests grow at a rate far exceeding what you would ever consider on Earth. Wherever there is a forest, there are monsters spawned from its depths.

As a note, Amelie is an older card, but the other three are new.

Sorry for the long post. I wanted to build a decent backstory.

My small set is based around a brother and sister, both of which were elves and members of the Heartfire family (masterful manipulators of flame). While visiting the Kingdom of Invictus, their home kingdom was raided, and their family brutally slaughtered along with most of the population. This caused the brother to go on a quest for vengeance. When his sister could not convince him to stay, she opted to join him, as she could not stand to lose the last remaining member of her family. This quest led the brother and sister, Darius and Alenia Heartfire, to the location of an ancient hammer that had been locked away several centuries prior due to its volatile, uncontrollable power. This weapon was known simply as Vulcan's Hammer, and had absorbed the vengeful, explosive nature of its creator. It had retained the name of its creator, as no being had been able to wield its raging flames. What many don't know about the hammer is that it draws on the negative emotions of its wielder and slowly drains their life away in exchange for power. Darius, having only been in possession of the hammer for a day, immediately felt the effects of the infamous weapon and went through a painful, potentially fatal transformation process to become an Eternal. This process essentially turns the person into an avatar of their strongest feelings, and gives them an infinite lifespan and near perfect regenerative capabilities (functionally immortal). Because of this transformation and his family's natural mastery of flames, the brother had become the only person to use the weapon with any manner of control and became known throughout the realms as Vulcan's Vengeance.

(Yes, that is Darius before the transformation.)

I present: Ryynari, the Masked Rider!!!!!

    image

    image image image

This is Ryynari. He is a knight that wears a mask wherever he goes. On the inside, Rynarri is very timid, scared, and he feels lost. Ryynari was forced to protect the Lost Temple of Nyx when the gods threatened to destroy it. The palace contained a gemstone that could harness the God’s devotion, and if it was used enough, the gods would diminish and new beings would rise as gods to replace them. This was predicted long ago in an ancient prophecy. After lots of strenuous training, Ryynari became a great knight and protector of his home. Shortly after that, he lead an army to stop Kiora from flooding the palace. During this time, Pharika poisoned Ryynari’s entire family — His mom, dad, and three sisters. All of them died. Many of his followers died in this incident as well. After this, Ryynari vowed to protect all of the lost people who support him, but even so, all Ryynari wants is peace and to be reunited with his family. Ryynari wears a mask that changes to hide this. Ryynari is very close to one of his advisors, a faerie who shares the same feelings. This faerie also hides behind her own mask.
  • I made a few revisions to the temple. Also, all of my cards are new.
  • CLOSED FOR TOURNAMENT OFFICIATING.

There we have it, our winners of the preliminary rounds are: @spellpiper2213, @Temurzoa, @EternalWolf88, @Fallen_Lord_Vulganos, @Fantastickill7, @Revan, @Shadaar, @Sir_Draxin, and @RayearthIX. To the rest of you who had entered, better luck in your future endeavors.

The winners move on to the Single Combat round, here I would like you all to create a signature instant or sorcery spell with a CMC of 3 or less. Like before, please fall into cohesion with your mighty Knights. This will again be a blind draw pairing of combatants, so you will not know who you are combating until after the spell has been presented.

You all have one week to complete this task 09Feb...

Man I feel terrible that I got swept! Congrats to the winners!
  • What was the point of us making multiple cards if they counted for nothing? Why post the scores as they are completely meaningless without a scorecard?
  • How was this thing judged? I think @Faiths_Guide @sorinjace @shadow123 and @benw had superior card design over their opponents.
  • Why did I get 0?
  • @tookie1
Hosts are permitted to judge however they see fit :)

    Congrats @Winners!
  • edited February 2020
@Caulkwrangler, @tookie1 I used all cards they designed, but for results purposes, it is way easier to post the Knight rather than all their cards.

As for the actual judging, it is stated in the initial write-up that I use an algorithm that judges a card, or series, against another card, or series. Essentially, program builds a deck, in this case Brawl, around the entered cards, and they go into head to head matches. I went for a first to three in this scenario.

Think of it as an actual jousting match, 3 lances to 1...
  • @spookoops
The issue that they're noticing is that if you simply design busted and unrealistic cards there is no way that balanced and well designed cards will have any chance in that kind of algorithmic approach.

No problem though, you're welcome to judge in whatever way you choose.
  • edited February 2020
@Faiths_Guide, you're not wrong. The Algorithm is built to be completely unbiased, but when I input cards that fall out of parameters, the algorithm "cries" and I have to reword the card so as the algorithm understands. Plus, it is not the end all be all of my judging. it only accounts for a portion. That's where the judges personal thoughts and views come into play and decisions are made off of OP-ness, cohesion, grammar, syntax, etc.
  • @Faiths_Guide being free to judge things as you see fit does not make you, or that judgment, immune to question or accusation, so please put that cherry back on the sundae.

@spookoops thank you for your explanation.
  • @Faiths_Guide That’s what I was thinking. Your card was very well designed, interesting, and balanced. Of course @spookops, you may judge however you like.
