An open Letter to Cardsmith Santa [Feature Request-Thread]

What do you mean "he's not real?"

Dear Cardsmith Santa:

I know I'm speaking for all cardsmiths out there when I say that I've been a moderately good guy all year and hope that for this year's christmas, you might find it in your heart to reward that.
"How?", you ask?
Well, here's 3 ideas off the top of my head:

- Selectable Basic Borders
Right now, the only way of accessing the basiclands' colored land-borders is by making a basic Plains/Island/Swamp/Mountain/Forest with the old "Modern Frame" cardmaker.
So for this christmas, why not make them freely selectable like the other card borders?

- An Eldrazi Starterkit
Just in case the new, colorless mana symbol is here to stay, we'll kinda need that one.
And maybe a colorless nonartifact border, while we're at it.

- Fully Custom Types
Currently you may only select supertypes from a list - but given that there's an infinite amount of combinations by now, the list approach really becomes impracticable, and combinations like "Basic Artifact Land", "Land Creature" or "Legendary Snow Creature" are currently not possible.
As such, I can't be the only one wishing for the supertype of a card to be freely insertable by the user like the subtypes, now can I?

Well, that's my suggestion for this year's wishlist.
Anything that rest of the community, would like to add?
Fire ahead.

  • Here's my wishlist:

    - Hybrid borders
Currently the only options for hybrid mana spells and multicoloured planeswalkers is a mono border or a gold border, and I gotta admit I do get sick of the gold border sometimes. And with the other multicoloured spells that do have gold borders, it would be super cool to have those lines of colour along the edges of the art box and text box.

    - Scaleable text size
The Modern frame seems to be quite good at reducing the size of the text in order to fit for when we feel like going all Ice Cauldron or Dance of the Dead. Is there any way to get the text to shrink for the M15 frames as well?
  • My wishlist:

-Devoid borders(need some way to do that, as I want some way to make colored eldrazi!)

-Nyx borders(for those who do not know, Nyx borders are the borders on an enchantment creature, and we currently cannot get them on MTG cardsmith.

-My school to unblock MTG cardsmith from the school chromebooks(I cannot create or look at cards unless I bargan with my dad for time on his computer.)
  • - Planeswalker character count / mana symbols / fourth text box
145 characters can be a tight squeeze sometimes. Perhaps increasing this to cover four lines of text instead of three, like the new Gideon?

Would also be cool to reference mana symbols in planeswalker abilities like Koth.

And perhaps a fourth text box like Jace 2.0, which would also allow us to create commander planeswalkers like Daretti.
  • The only thing that is on my wish list is able to put a clan watermark on custom cards to make it feel more like a tribal card (like Ravnica)

Other than that, I am loving these other wishes an I hope they all come true!
  • Well... that pretty much covered everything I was going to say. Like, all of it. So here's a repeat, pointlessly, so I feel like I participated:

    - Border Options
Selectable Basic borders, like you have in the modern frames, Colorless nonartifact borders, Hybrid Color borders, Special borders (Devoid, Nyxborn, Miracle, et cetera et cetera) all selectable on the M15 frames.

    - Text Options
Selfscaleable text size, should you desire to reprint Chains of Mephistopheles (just a font size bar on the page somewhere would work). A fourth optional Planeswalker Ability box, for Planeswalker Commaders (Ob Nixilis!). A higher character count. Preferably much higher, if we're going in that direction, and mana symbols in the text. I understand why you don't allow that, but is it really so hard to shrink the symbol? (I honestly wouldn't know.)

    - Characterization Options
The new Eldrazi mana symbol, the ability to type in your own supertypes (Basic Legendary Artifact Enchantment Creature Lands, breh), also the ability to shrink the name and type texts to fit more would be nice.
  • And now I have ideas!

    - Token Features
The ability to enter in the Supertypes and Subtypes of Tokens, (Such as Legendary Artifact Creature - Goblin Construct) and therefore the ability to seperate type from name on tokens (Legendary Artifact Creature - Maulface is not accurate.) The ability to insert mana symbols, shrink text size, have clear breaks... really, just give the text boxes on all card types the same options and it'll be all good. So instead of a bar, have a box.
  • Everything I want is already here which is, well... Everything here! So I'm commenting to: 1. Hopefully get this page more views, and 2. Confirm that <> Colorless mana, is in fact here to stay!
  • I want this one more for a particular set. If you're working on sets, you'll LOVE this one.

    - Custom Icons
You know the thing that becomes a bronze on mythic rare cards? Yeah, the ability to put in your own icon. That way, you have a staple on any themed set you might have.
  • -Versatile Planeswalker/Creature Borders
I would like multicolored borders for planeswalkers/creatures that are not just gold. For example, a border for a red/blue planeswalker would be half blue, half red.

    - RTR Symbol being accessible for everyone.

If we have little width of blank space that can be insert in the text box of M15 frame, we can make cards that looks neater.

For example, I want thin blank spaces between those three abilities in this card.
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/pacifism-charm?list=user

And I would also like to see the font size change system. Maybe if we can control the font size, we can control the width of blank lines ourselves..?

    - *Re-Edit Published cards?
I understand server space would be an issue for the images, so no art tweaking (unless we re-upload the image ourselves - see my other suggestion), but it would be nice to be able to go back and re-format some lines of text, spacing, or as a quick fix for that awkward moment when you realize you misspelled something, or left out a creature type, a comma, a capital letter... Let's not forget, maybe a new expansion symbol appears or is unlocked that is more suitable for a card - this would allow that. I suppose the only thing we wouldn't be able to change is the title of the card - understandably, because of how things work; but it would be neat if we also somehow could.

(*This suggestion would go a long way toward eliminating those pesky 404 errors, as well as wiping out "favorites", just because we wanted to fix and/or improve something.)

    - Art cropping *after* you see the preview / while you're designing the card
I can't be the only one who thinks it's troublesome and time-consuming that you need to re-upload the image and start over in order to adjust the art.

Otherwise, most of the things mentioned by everyone else.

    Thanks Cardsmith Santa.

The modern card frame and planeswalker generator image upload section won't let people crop using mobile devices ie. my kindle and phone. You have to crop the image before it will let you continue, so I am unfortunately unable to make any planewalker cards at the moment. The M15 and token sections work perfectly on my devices, could you please use the M15 code for the other two?
  • @Cryptonight Your first suggestion is EXACTLY my wish list. We need that!
  • @MtgSalvader I imagine it wouldn't take up much server space, because it's all text. The only thing is that I know nothing about programming, and so it could be a pain in the butt to implement. Hopefully not, because it would be extremely handy. I would even forgo hybrid borders for a year if it meant I could revise text within published cards.
  • Yeah, we've been trying to get that for a long time, but they did give us the Card Text box underneath our published card that we can copy and paste onto a new card and edit from there. That has helped A LOT!
  • edited December 2015
Yes, I've noticed that. It is quite helpful (and I'm glad it's there), but we still have to: upload the picture, find the correct cropping/framing, manually punch in the mana cost, re-type the card title, choose the card type, pick the expansion symbol, select the right rarity, type the sub-type, adjust P/T, re-credit the artist... that's a lot of clicking (not counting any editing to the actual textbox)! :p

*Edit: Also I've noticed it doesn't quite work on Planeswalker cards.

    Dear Cardsmith Santa,
What would be really nice is.....
    1. CUSTOM SET SYMBOLS. I know people will abuse this but here I go. This could be a very nice feature for a lot of us I personally would feel it would be a nice addition to a card/cards for a set that needs to be distinguished with other ones.

    2. Watermarks. I know someone already said this (Paul-u) but doing this would be very special and make the site much more customizable to people who need to again Distinguish cards for factions and such. Also a library for them would be nice to select or make one. ;)

    3. Eldrazi Borders. You know the ones from BFZ & OotG those look great so ya those to.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
  • edited December 2015
@Latinas I agree. We NEED those. I also see your point about how someone could probably create a porno symbol just for fun. Maybe if only Patreons could use set symbols, it would dissuade abusers b/c theyll need to pay. OH NO! :)

@Cryptonight I know quite a bit about programming, and although it might require some back tracking, it would not be hard. Plus, even if it were it would be a welcome addition. I have this card, Zzen-Alkrethor, whose a lich. However, his ability needs to affect OTHER zombies, and his subtype should be Zombie Wizard, not Lich. Im sure most of us have some embarrasing card.
  • I... WANT... IZZET... WATERMARK!
  • edited December 2015
More card's rarity symbols would be nice.. If people see cards with cool new symbols out side of this site, they might be interested in where the card was created.
  • - Hybrid Borders!
    - Main thing: ALLOW US TO EDIT CARDS! PLEASE! Pretty please? With a cherry on top? Or even two? I could give up two cherries for that.
  • edited December 2015
@MtgSalvader, I saw your card & see what you mean. It's not that I'm ungrateful; this site is awesome like no other, but it's an awful lot of work when you notice a typo... =[ - and like I said, there is the problem of losing favorites, plus broken links when you delete a card in order to fix (and re-publish) it.

Since the website stores all full-card images, I imagine there is a way to *re-use the artwork portion without degradation or loss of quality (and to have the option to upload a new image if desired). Clicking 'Revise' would load up the Edit page with all of the text entered in, as it was before clicking 'Publish', and all it needs is to store the text somewhere.

*Or to make things easier, if it's viable to store the cropped artwork images of published cards, there's always that.

Somehow I think implementing this would be less work than than to make every combination of hybrid borders, gold-border color trims, and colored (plus combination) land frames / text-boxes.

    Just sayin' ;)
  • @Gelectrode YES!! So many of the guild watermarks can be perfectly reused. Like how selesnya can be for just about any green army and Izzet could be for dragons. Also, the others can alll be reused well!

I have a bit of a bucket list here.
make a more useful header: MtgCardsmith
    (Make Card|Make Token|Make Special Card)
    |Old frame.| Text frame| Plane/Phenomenon|
    |Modern | Textless.____ | Scheme. |
    |M15. |________________| Vanguard. |
    |Transform|
    |Split. |
    |Level Up. |
    |Planeswalker|
    |Full art. |
    |__________|
More actual borders, so instead of just black, there would be white, gold and silver too.
Multicolored cards having half black, half blue colors instead of gold.
The ability to make custom supertypes.
    Guild watermarks.
"Remove silver oval on bottom of M15 card" option
The ability to crop Planeswalker and modern frame pictures on mobile devices.
Mana symbols on tokens, and custom supertypes
    Colorless mana up to 20
    Colorless creature frame
    New colorless OotGW mana symbols
    Custom rarity colors
Custom set symbols, and more old ones to go with the old frame
The ability to put collector's numbers
    The untap symbol
    The ability to edit afterwards
    Fourth ability on planeswalkers
    Devoid Frame
    Miracle frame
  • I'd like improved search features, so we can look for all of a member's cards with trample or all their Elves or something. Right now, we can't even look for their enchantments or artifacts since those aren't listed under Types.
  • I like that one @Biblio - Also, having a sort set option... featuring alphabetical, date ascending, date descending, mana type (in standard WUBRGgc fashion), and card type... this would be astounding!

There are a lot of really good ideas out there!

  • Woke up on the 25th to find out that -mana is a go.

    So far, so good :]
  • I want:

    1) Eldrzazi frame,

    2)Watermarks,

    3) The ability to further edit your cards, and

    4) Custom Types (So you could have basic creatures and stuff)
  • I second everything here.
  • Just a few quick follow ups to this thread:

    1. The newer eldrazi borders are transparent to showcase the artwork, expanding artwork outside of the typical editable area would likely mean a new card generator just for a single type - that's pretty heavy. SO... does anyone have a few links/examples to colorless borders that would suffice? The artwork for "colorless" borders we currently have honestly look too much like lands (brown), so they were never included in the editors.

    2. We've seen people asking for custom set symbols, but technical issues aside, will the community make full use of the tools in this case (the trade off being time we would spend building other features/improvements). I think we should run a test first to find out...

    3. The ability to edit cards comes up very often. We've already talked about the reasons this doesn't exist in the past (image storage primarily), but also recognize there may be another approach where a user can just "replace" the image and card text while maintaining the original entry/url/favorites. If this is the highest priority (see below) for the community, we can put some more brains on it.

In addition to the ideas we didn't get to finish/make in 2015 (remember our crowdfunding campaign anyone?), we'll be taking a few of the ideas from the forums and our feedback form (the crossover is very high) and posting our Annual Survey in January.

We highly value feedback and participation from the community, and also want to make it clear that our small team can only do so much in a given month/year. Our Patrons are helping development directly, as well as those of you who are sharing links to your cards and introducing others to the site, so thank you for your support!
