    On Lizza, Secret Keeper:

    I like the sinister vibe behind hexproof/deathtouch, and I like that it protects your other creatures as long as this is your masterwork, though I don't think it feels very blue/black, that's more of a green/white ability to me, it reminds me of Shalai, Voice of Plenty actually:

    I do think that, as a mythic rare, it needs to work on its own so I would give it Masterwork as well. The concept of sacrificing your own masterwork is really interesting. However because this ability lets you choose a new masterwork you can sacrifice your whole board and make the opponent discard their whole hand, it's a bit much. In addition, with a token generator it's very easy to make the opponent discard the card they draw each turn at instant speed which would lock them out of the game, it's not a very fun play pattern.

    The return ability is nice but feels disconnected from the rest of the card. Masterwork and discover-focused decks are pretty different archetypes, I would make different cards out of those concepts to aim at different decks.

    On Mysterious Mountain:

    Wow, that would be really broken! In general, lands that produce two mana are extremely strong so it definitely should say "Add U OR B". On top of that, the discard ability is also too strong to go on a land. If it was an enchantment, it would probably be worth 4 mana or more. Consider for instance that this lets you draw your whole deck with cards that say "discard a card" as a cost like Noose Constrictor:

    On Varezo, Genius Artist:

    +2: Because this is messing with the discover ability itself, I don't think the keyword is needed anymore. It probably should just say: "Reveal the top card of your library. You may cast it, and you may cast it without paying its mana cost if it's a noncreature spell." That being said, free spells seem too strong to be a +2 of a planeswalker.

    -1: Lands are not spells so you can just say "Look at the bottom card of your library, you may cast it." :) I like the idea, it's original, but it feels a bit redundant with the first ability which is also a card advantage ability. I like sometimes when planeswalkers feel like very specific little machines that do one thing, but in that case their abilities need to be very synergistic between each other (e.g.: Nissa, Steward of Elements). I would then put Scry instead of discover on the first ability so at least you have control over the bottom card of your library.

    -6: It's a pretty fun ultimate, I would do it the same critic as I did to my own design earlier though, this is just a cute way of saying "you win the game" in any non-Commander constructed format. If you're playing this card, you just have to put any infinite combo in your sideboard. I think it would be more interesting if it pushed you to look for silver bullets in your sideboard (like Karn, the Great Creator). For instance, in our current standard everyone would just put something like Heliod, Sun Crowned + Glint-Horn Buccaneer + Benthic Biomancer onto the battlefield from their sideboard and win on the spot (it's just an example, literally any Standard has an infinite combo with three cards):

  • @ningyounk I have a small question- are you thinking about including any already existing planeswalkers in here?
  • @shadow123

    Serra will be a returning planeswalker for sure ^^ The new Da Vinci character will mostly likely be a planeswalker as well. We could stop there or we could add a third and last one depending on our needs, but it would only happen if we have a really good idea for the story or we need a planeswalker for gameplay reasons. At this point we don't need to add any other planeswalker just for the fun of it since we already have a returning and a new one. Other planeswalkers could stop by in the story without getting a card in the set though.

    Super cool set man!

    I'm building a music-themed set with the same general common skeleton that you posted last year. Again, great job on taking this on, you are sooo dedicated.

    @ningyounk I was wondering if you would be willing to share where you're getting all the great arts for this set?
  • @ningyounk Okay. That makes sense.
  • @ningyounk I was just wondering, isn’t white not supposed to have ramp? And does serran life cross the line there?
  • @Ral1000

    About 99% of the pictures actually come from Deviantart, I just make sure to save any picture I find cool in a folder somewhere on my computer and I sort them by theme to find theme back ^^

    @shadow123

    White having access to ramp is quite a colour pie bend yes ^^ That being said, WOTC has been looking to give White its own kind of ramp for a while now, with attempts like Smothering Tithe to make it work in a white way. Tying it to life gain is as much White as it gets so I think serran life is actually a cool solution to this problem ^^ Additionally, sets are allowed to bend the colour pie a little depending on the set's main theme. For instance, green is allowed to have flyiers on Tarkir because of the dragons theme, even though it's technically a colour pie break.

     Destructor Dragon MB1
  • @ningyounk thanks for sharing! Loving the set!

  • Can we have some clerics in uncommon white @ningyounk?
  • @ningyounk Okay. That makes sense. But wouldn't cards that use serran life be abused in formats like modern and legacy?

    On another note- here is a design I just thought of right now:

    Creative Outburst
    5GU
    Reveal the top five cards of your library. You may put a creature card from among them onto the battlefield. If you do, it becomes your masterwork. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

    Hey @ningyounk, I just wanted to check something with you:

    I'm designing a set based very much around music, and it's roughly based on the Enlightenment. Rezatta was my inspiration to do it, and I wanted to make sure I'm not treading on your territory too much.

    I'm using the skeleton you posted on page 1, which you said works for anyone so I assumed that was OK.

    Notably, the enlightenment came years after the Italian Renaissance, so I think it should be OK, however I just wanted to check in with you to make sure there won't be any disagreements, or give you a chance to tell me if there are any themes you want me to leave out.
  • @LordTachanka123

    Of course! I'm pretty sure were going to have quite a few clerics at uncommon ^^ Actually we could probably put a few more at common, I kinda grabbed the first illustrations I had when putting the cards together, but once we move to uncommon we're going to have to go back on the flavour (name, illustration and creature types) of all of theses cards so the world feel cohesive.

    @shadow123

    Serran life certainly has the potential to break something, similarly to other mechanics such as phyrexian mana for instance. But I don't think it's problematic per se, look at the Treasure mechanic for instance in Ixalan, it gave blue, black and red a lot more mana than they were used to as well and it was completely fine. I think it really depends on the individual designs we put in the set, but inherently I think the mechanic can be healthy. In addition to that, serran life is as easy to interact with than regular life which should help keeping it in check. In any case, if a mechanic is fun in Standard, it shouldn't completely break older formats but one broken combo with an old card shouldn't prevent it from being printed, new cards can't be hostage from old designs.

    On Creative Outburst:
    I like the idea, but the bonus of becoming a masterwork is pretty insignificant by itself so it's a bit expensive compared to other similar cards such as See the Unwritten or Vivien's Invocation for instance:

    Ral1000

    No problem, feel free to use anything from this thread that inspires you! :) As far as I'm concerned you could even borrow whole mechanics and cards from this thread, they're really just concepts for everyone to use ^^ So, for the themes, please don't leave anything out of your set that you think would fit well just because Rezatta also has it =)

    I do think the set skeleton I posted in the introduction is pretty vanilla and should fit most sets pretty well. It was mainly inspired from the set skeleton of Amonkhet though I toned down the number of lands (Amonkhet had a Desert theme) and adjusted the number of removal (-1/-1 counters in Amonkhet skewed things a little). Beware that you need to adjust the numbers a little based on the themes of your set though (especially if you have an archetype caring about artifact or enchantments or lands for instance).
  • @ningyounk thank you! I probably won't use any of the mechanics for my set, but it's great to know that I have the green light on this project.

    I upped the number of enchantments in my set as that is a partial theme, but otherwise I kept it mostly the same.I am still in the very early stages, but I have some of the mechanics and stuff nailed down.

    If you want to take a look, here is the link to the few cards I have so far: https://mtg.design/u/Ral1000/LIN

    Thanks again!

    Would clerics believe the three colors of Serra
    @ningyounk?
    Also, for the dances, could blue perhaps go from hand to battlefield? I don’t exactly know what two zones fit blue. I’m also thinking that white would somewhere to exile, or vice versa.
    Edit:Be, not believe
  • @ningyounk

    I'd love to work on flavor!
  • Also, here’s an idea for CO @shadow123

    Creative Outburst
    5GU
    Reveal the top five cards of your library. You may put a creature card from among them onto the battlefield. If you do, it becomes your masterwork. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
    Renaissance-Put five +1/+1 counters on your masterwork.
    @ningyounk
  • Hey @ningyounk, like @The-DM said, is it possible to have a creative design thread?
  • edited May 2020
    @LordTachanka123 @ningyounk

    Okay. I was thinking of this to be an uncommon design, it still could be powered up more, saying that it is multicolored and 7 mana.

    How about this?

    5GU
    Creative Outburst
    UC
    Reveal the top six cards of your library. You may put a creature card from among them into the battlefield. If you do, it enters the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes your masterwork.

    On the topic serran life, I think I agree now :smile:.

  • About how to handle the clerics: That will be a quite an interesting nut to crack! I don't know yet how all the different colours will fit inside the Church of Serra (Black being the obvious outlier here). It's going to depend on the world building. Are green, white and black clerics of the Serran Church all following exactly the same mantra even though they could represent different aspects of it, or are they in relative conflict with each other? Both could work, we need to consider what would be the most interesting.

    For the dances, my best guess would be:

    White: Some kind of blink effect.
    Blue: Some kind of bounce effect or some kind of draw effect.
    Black: Some kind of recuperation/reanimation effect, or some kind of tutoring.
    Red: That's the tough one. Not sure, honestly.
    Green: Some kind of tutoring, putting permanents on the battlefield from the top of your library, or some kind of draw effect.

    Oh, an uncommon? Might work at 7 mana then, though it's usually more of a rare or mythic effect. But it's been done before at uncommon so it could be possible. They tend to be overly strong effects though:

    I like the idea of the creature coming onto the battlefield with +1/+1 counters, it is the kind of bonus that would justify this CMC yeah.
  • Umm, @ningyounk, there are random spaces in your last post? I see gamekeeper and starrix, but if you posted other cards, I don't see them.
  • @LordTachanka123

    No, there are indeed weird spaces in my post for some reason. I commented from a random computer at work (no judgement, I'm a biologist I have to wait a lot during experiments XD) so I'm guessing the browser or something didn't agree with the forum of MTGCardsmith for some reason ^^"

    YOU GET TO BE A BIOLOGIST? AND LIVE IN FRANCE?
    You are of the great luck @ningyounk.
  • How about:

    Church of Serra:
    White-Charity
    Black-Beauty
    Blue-Enlightenment
    Red-Emotion
    Green-NO ONE CARES
  • Green - Splendor
  • Green can die in a hole @The-DM.
  • edited May 2020
    Lol Green = no one cares XD

    Now I’m just picturing an ability: “No one cares - If you concede this match, you get an additional free mulligan at the beginning of the next game.”

    Edit: I was reading the first page of this set this morning... it’s really impressive! Way more structured and balanced than anything I’ve done and makes me feel really haphazard about my cube XD. I did some planning, but not nearly this much.
  • Great for the new set, core 21
