An open Letter to Cardsmith Santa [Feature Request-Thread]

The editing thing is definitely the most attractive thing on the board. Honest to god. It would help so much, and it would also make people more susceptible to feedback and it would make giving the feedback a lot easier knowing that people could spend 5 seconds changing it rather than re-doing the entire card.

Cheers for working so hard guys. I hope you guys take another crack at the crowdfunding or something along those lines soon!
    How's the patreon going, anyway?
  • Devoid cards and correct gold cards must happen.
  • The problem you run into with the editing, from a devil's advocate point of view, is if it has favorites, but gets edited in a way that changes it, will the people who liked it initially still like it, because now it's a different card. It also doesn't re-enter the site, so essentially, unless it's in the forum no one "new" will see it. Which leads to another problem... the creepers who make grossly inappropriate cards, or cards with miles of profanity. Suddenly they can now make a bunch of normal cards, and then come back in a day or two and BAM a boatload of cards that would otherwise have been excommunicated upon sight.

I love the idea of edits, but I think it should definitely be a Premium feature, which at this moment would mean only 20 people could use it, and is it worth all that work for 20 people? Would it attract more people to become contributors?

    I'll play devil's advocate to devil's advocate. :p

    I'll address in order:

Firstly, the revision feature of course would not be intended to drastically change a card. I imagine that most people would have the right mind to simply create a new card, if their intention is to change an older one from recognition.

Those who favorite a card that gets revised will see the tweaked version - hopefully not too different from the original (compare 'What Lurks Beneath'. ;)) In any case, noticing a small difference in a card that you favorite (usually for improvement), is still better than having it vanish altogether, am I right? And if it no longer speaks to a person, they can always unfavorite.

Secondly, I think profanity spammers might not even have accounts. The 'revise' feature would only be available to those with accounts (paying or not would be up to MtGCS's discretion). And if someone with an account revises their card to have inappropriate text / images, good members would flag them just as always. A number of warnings could eventually lead to a user's banishment, but we have to trust the majority of the community to appreciate this website for the service of creating clean Magic cards.

Oftentimes a card is published, gets a few favorites, but when you delete it to fix a small oversight, the people who favorite are either oblivious to the fact, or get annoyed that the cards they favorite just vanish, disinclined to go digging to see if the member re-posted an updated version.

I still wholeheartedly believe it would be such a relief to have a 'Revise' button - leading to the Edit page, as seen before publishing a card. As per my technical suggestions, it could be done using very minimal extra server space (just text), and (from what I know) should be easy enough to program saving the filled form. The benefits are huge by comparison.

If there is only one feature upgrade, that is my vote.

Thanks for the consideration - keep up the great work! :)

We can certainly see both sides, our initial take is that it would be available as a premium feature as well, in hopes that it would be desirable enough to help offset our development and server costs. Accountability also plays a major part in this decision, as even now a majority of the spam\inappropriate cards we see actually come from spam accounts, not anonymous users. Giving them a second avenue to cause trouble isn't in the best interest of the site or community members.

On another topic, mobile design and access is becoming vitally important. Our internal goal for the year will be addressing this with a newer responsive design - something that we have already been working on during the fall to get the assets ready. If you are wondering why editor updates have been sparse, it is because this is a critical item for us and we've been working outside to prepare (and pay for) the new design. Finding the time to do everything is our challenge moving forward.

Yes, there are only so many hours in a day. :(

I can understand that a mobile design - and/or an "app", if there isn't one already, would be pushed to the top of the priority list. I wouldn't know, since I've never owned an i-anything, but I can understand that it would potentially reach so many more users, and therefore I have to agree it's a good place to focus on.

Having said that, I do want to share a quick comment, if it adds any more weight:

I wrote: "This is why I wish MtGCardsmith had a convenient 'Revise' button. ;)"

ningyouNK responded: "I just arrived on this site and only designed two cards with this tool but i couldn't agree more XD"

" a majority of the spam\inappropriate cards we see actually come from spam accounts, not anonymous users. Giving them a second avenue to cause trouble isn't in the best interest of the site or community members. "

If that's the case, then I concede my initial point in regards, but it's not exactly a second avenue in my opinion - it's more like an extra step (now they have to upload two images, etc). I guess I still have trouble believing people would go to such lengths...

    I wish the best.
