What would the conditions be for a planeswalker? Summoning creatures with defender? Emblems that in addition to their other effects make your creatures not be able to attack? Thanks!
Good question. If you make a Planeswalker, the Defender part should be central to the card, so I think the ult and/or the general theme of the card should relate to the whole defender thing, like summoning a 0/4 Wall token for the +1 and then the ult is a lightning helix for X, where X is the amount of defenders you control and whatnot.
As long as "defender" is used somewhere in the rules text and has something important to do with the card, then Planeswalkers are fine.
If you mean completely, you need to go in and edit your collection and remove it. Whenever you go into your own profile there is a small grey box that says "Edit Profile" in the upper right corner.
I want to try and make a new one for this, but if I don't I am gonna post a second one. If you don't mind, please use it as my second entry should I not submit a new one.
Super old card. I know it will be a bit of a 'Ugh...' to judge, ha ha. I just wanted to toss him out there, as I don't imagine there are that many walkers that flourish around Defender.
While the card itself brings nothing new to the table, it is a gorgeous card. It looks like something WotC would print, due to the combination of the art and the proper syntax as well as the very reined-in powerlevel. It holds a striking similarity to Soul of the Faultless, which are the same colors. Overall, it takes fourth place on pure elegance, both in design and looks.
The card looks a bit crowded due to the limitation of the sites engine, so that's that. With that said, I enjoy the concept of the card, and it is a "true" defender that deters the opposition from attacking, especially ones it goes Monstrous. It survives Lightning Bolt but has no real defense outside of that, which means it needs some supporting cards to really make it work, it can however force the opponent to suicide their board position if you can make it go monstrous and you have a card that forces the opponents to attack. Definitely a great Build-Around-Me.
One of the more "modest" entries, so to speak. The card art looks like something I could see coming out of either of the Tarkir sets. "Disarm" is a really interesting mechanic that brings a new twist to defender decks, and while we have nothing else to build upon the mechanic, it looks fun in a vacuum and the mechanic is very flavourful. Tied together by the conditional life-gain, it just looks like a true uncommon. The "Defender" flavour REALLY shines through in the card, which is why it gained 2nd place. It is the card that was submitted that has the strongest "reason" for being a defender to me, without being a wall.
This card just rocks. It is everything you really need in a defender deck. Board-wipe tech that is mainboard-able. The card looks like something WotC would print artwise, and the hybrid mana really sells it for playability. The fact that your deck only needs to be either G or W gives the card incredible flexibility and I can imagine it becoming a stable in Doran EDH. Combine the card with Assault Formation and @Gamerpg04 card http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/war-preparations and you're in for a ride through valuetown.
Wall of Goblins is just an incredibly fun take on red defender. Red doesn't have a lot of defender for good reasons, but it's just such a goblin-ish thing.
Overgrown Pass was hard to judge, because we don't know the effect Surge will have on the metagame yet. It has potential to be a VERY GOOD CARD, and it definitely looks great. I would say that art looks more like a land (and the name!), which is also why it didn't make top 4.
War Preperations were a bit off a odd-one-out. It has good flavour, but the art wasn't _that fitting_, and it really needed a sacrifice clause to really tie the "preparations" together, so that you could "end" the preparations once you were ready, but it was one of the more unique entries and I thought was very creative.
Baokai, Barrier Mage is just a bit broken, which is why I choose not include it at all. It's devilishly hard to get rid of and tutors stuff every turn, making him super hard to recover from if he hits the board and sits there for a few turns. He would probably be banned in EDH really goddamn fast, which is why I choose to be neutral on subject in the judging. He is great for a modern/legacy pillowfort deck, however, and is balanced by the fact that he is legendary and isn't an enchantment himself. It just so happens that Baokai + Defensive alignment work very well together, making him even more of a nightmare to get rid of!
Thank you to everyone who entered. You can go back to the contest intro text to read up on your prizes. I will provide my service whenever I'm available (within reason!), Circuit points have been distributed.
Good luck in the next contests, everyone! Grimshac out.
Obviously this is up to you @Grimshac, but, could we add "awards" to the contest. Each of the top four and the honorable mentions get a favorite on their entry? It shouldn't imbalance anything and it would garner additional interest I believe.
Thanks for the contest! This sounds like a lot of fun!
P.S. Very thorough and well displayed synopsis. Well Done!
I don't give out favourites haphazardly, and if it wasn't because that it is the only "widely accepted"... currency we use on the site, I wouldn't be giving any out for prizes at all. I only really favourite stuff that I actually think is a favourite.
The favourite-part of the prizes of the contest are an exception that I grudgingly do because I feel like I have to.
I see your point with garnering interest, but I believe that if the cards are good enough they will get favourites eventually (Or so I like to believe). Don't forget that circuit winners will get a trophy in my circuit-set!
Liking a card and favouriting it is not synonymous for me, though I can see why it is so for other people. If you backlog and check my favourites through the years, you can see that I am extremely stingy when it comes to the favourite button ^^
@Faiths_Guide Based upon your suggestion I made a seperate account, from which I will dispense favourite to every entry, as well as the "prize" favourites.
