Magmapede by @Corwinnn with challenge, "Create a card on which its rules text is stated at least three times."
@ThePhantomJoker: I like the name, I like the art, I like the overall feel of the card. There are just a few tiny problems I see with it. Firstly - I think it should say "until end of turn, you don't lose this mana as steps and phases end" when it adds the RR, because then you can actually use that mana for the ability in combat (which I guess was the intent but if not, I apologize). Another thing is that the challenge said to use the name three times, which has been done, but the third time it's unnecessary, there should be just "it deals 3 damage". All in all, solid entry and an interesting card.
@mmm3creator: All right, to start off with the art is just perfect. Creepy, Crawly, bury. It compares well to an Inferno titan with its power and rarity tweaked down; but pulls off a completely different flavor. The mana when entering the battlefield means the first lightning bolt trigger is effectively free or you can cast a 2 mana instant/buff. Another tactic would be to use a 1 mana flicker effect to get a 1 point mana boost. Done early it can still attack with haste, and done after it untaps. Meets the challenge well.
Me: This card is very well built. The art fits very well with the subtype, the name and it rules text. However, for an insect, it seems quite overpowered. I don't think I have ever seen an uncommon, 7-drop insect for eight damage. This seems nearly impossible to play because it definitely is for aggro, yet it would take too long to play. Other than that, great card.
Forbidden Tome by @pstmdrn with challenge, "Create a card that punishes you when you learn a lesson."
@ThePhantomJoker: This challenge wasn't easy, but you've approached it in the simplest and nicest way possible. A repeatable source of learn is pretty good, but you can't just get anything you want without paying some life. The flavor is on point with the name. The art is a tiny bit underwhelming, but it does the job. Text formatting could be improved, but the concept is there.
@mmm3creator: Starting with the art, if your credit is correct it unfortunately looks like the artist just repainted Innistrad’s Grimoire of the Dead. So while the art is good, repeating that of and established card sucks all the real thrill of it as they eye falls on it and you think it’s a card you know. Learn is a new mechanic and I was interested to see the challenge because there were a lot of ways that could go. I won’t like was kind of disappointed, expected more. The way you went with it, it is almost Strictly better the current Jayemdae Tome standard of Arcane Encyclopedia. Takes 1 more mana to get out, but draws a card every turn at 1 mana less and has a Lesson possibility baked in. The “punishment” for learning a lesson comes more like a standard black draw a card cost. Given Strixhaven’s possibilities, there were all sorts of not-so-vanilla places it could have gone.
Me: This was a hard challenge, however I think you advance a tad more. The idea of forbidden tome seems kind of cliche if you know what I mean. Similarly, I think losing two life is a little bland. Maybe something like "If you choose to reveal a lesson card, create an artifact token with whenever you learn a lesson card, you you lose 1 life." Not only will have a longer card, but it is a little more complex. Other than that, good job.
After talking to my fellow judges, we have decided that the winner is, @Corwinnn and @OhWyrm. I know we only had two cards, but I do think both of these cards were very good. However, this means that @WarriorCatInAhat and @pstmdrn did not make it to the next round. I will PM you your rewards.
@pstmdrn - It's always a pleasure and a challenge to compete with and against you! This was a great challenge and I'm glad I got my card made before my life became so chaotic! @FORFUN and Judges - Thank you for the critiques and the victory!
I really love this format and hope this returns again!!
