Put A Counter On That
I want to say first and foremost thank you to everyone that had participated in my Halloween contest last year. That was an awesome contest. There was phenomenal entries and I am thankful to Corwinnn and Suicidal Deity for helping finish the contest up for me while I had some real life traumas and tragedies going on. It's really been a hard last 10 months. I will spare you guys the gruesome details. I will say though that it was nothing I would ever wish to see anyone else ever go through. That said, again, thank you to those of you that haven't forgotten about me. This is why this community kicks so much butt. ?☺️
That said, here is my pitch for this contest!
I'd like to see you guys come up with permanent cards that require some type of a counter to be put on it or it puts a counter onto something else (it can be anything unheard of or something like a suspend card, just as an example).
Yes, it's that simple. Let your imagination fly.
Rules:
1.) Permanent cards only. They can create tokens, as long as the card itself is a permanent too.
2.) The card has to create counters of some type. It can be any amount or any type of counters.
3.) Please use nonMTG art and credit the artist if possible.
4.) No limit on how many entries.
5.) Contest ends the end of the day on May 1st 2022. I'm giving it ample amount of time to make sure I can get back to judging this contest in due time. Again, thank you to Corwinnn for helping me with my last contest. Anyone who knows me knows the Halloween contests and the cards of mtgcardsmith contests are my favorites, so you know I was definitely going through things out here if I couldn't finish the contest and judge it in a timely manner for you guys. Thank you again, guys. Can't say it enough.
Prizes:
3rd place winner gets 5 likes
Honorable mentions get 2 likes each. Honorable mentions will be included if there are enough entries.
That is it! I hope you guys have fun with this contest, and good luck!

Cardsmith doesn’t have the option for it, but there should be a green color marker in the type line to signify that Ythstorm is, indeed, green, as right now he’s technically colorless.

Rage Mana - a counter similar to Energy from Kaladesh, but on steroids. Counters are placed on the player specifically and both permanents and non-permanents can add or remove rage mana from the reserve.

Augment counters - placed onto creatures to denote when they have been augmented. It is also separated into two subversions, Mech and Bio.
Mech ex) https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/augment-nun?list=set&set=64215
Bio ex) https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/heterochromatic-neko-spy-1?list=set&set=64215
Honkai counters - like Rage Mana but can also cause problems late game if not using Honkai permanents or non-permanents which is referred to as Global Honkai Levels.

Creature effected heavily by Global Honkai Level ex) https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/vermillion-knight-himeko?list=set&set=65241
Virus counters - placed onto creatures and adds the mechanic Virulent to said creatures. Cure and Herbalism are mechanics in the same set that can remove these counters from permanents.

Before I get into this though, one thing please.
@TheGamingBolasChannel your cards you submitted was cool but some of them didn't specify counters being put on a permanent except for the cat that had the augment counter. I wasn't sure if you was aware of that or just wanted to share your cards with us here but I really liked your take on Sheoldred, in some ways I feel it's a less broken version of the actual Sheoldred. So please take that as a compliment.
Without further ado, here goes the winners.
3rd place Xenagos The Carousers by @Ranshi
I felt that it was the most realistic card of the bunch. I think tribute has more to offer than wizards has given us of it, and that I do think we will at some point see more tribute cards, especially if a set based around counters comes up again similar to Ikoria. I don't think it will be anytime soon, just down the road. But I honestly can see a legendary tribute creature being created. And why not? Doesn't it sound flavorful? For these reasons, I gave this card the 3rd place spot. Mainly because it used an already existing creature and while it made complete sense to do so, I usually in my contest favor the more original ideas first. It still made top 3 though. Really cool concept and idea.
2nd place Vengeful Ronin/Oni Of Revenge by @Coffeeish
Oh hell yeah. A awesome use of disturbed ability coupled by a transform effect AND a way to exile cards while being able to use them, giving the secret counters a strong chance of replayability within many formats in the game? This is a very awesome card. I feel like it would have been a rare rarity, which is why I have given it 2nd place, for the balance but to be fair it is extremely well done. I would totally rock this card in a deck or two and I play edh at that lol.
HONORABLE MENTION
Junku, Eater Of Souls by @Tonysparks
I felt like this was a really believable and cool concept like I can see it actually being a real card, it just felt too busy with the entering the battlefield effect, I feel it didn't need that effect, like just start it off with whenever a creature card goes to the graveyard, exile it... etc. etc. and I feel that it would have probably stolen Ranshi's spot (sorry Ranshi! Lol) It more or less is Vault of the Archangel if you earn it but on a singular body. Again, another great card though.
HONORABLE MENTION
I love win or lose con cards. This card felt like the balance was off to me, but dude. That ability is sick. Reminds me of Vraska and the assassins she has created tokens of in the past. Love it. Call me nuts but I can see this creature not having to cost 5 mana to cast, it isn't a very easy ability to pull off. I'm not saying it is drastically off or too high but maybe it could be more efficient at 4 mana value? Just some thoughts.
And now, 1st place winner is
I felt this was the most properly done card and the one that had most chance of seeing play, especially since it is a common and it isn't easy to design a common card as it is while being creative within limited space. The name took thought, I mean I don't think I would ever have come up with a name like that, and the Guidehorn is paying homage to old school magic rhino creatures I feel. Even if the creature gave itself the counter, it would still be balanced. Well done!!
Thank you to all participants. @FireOfGolden your art on your cards is always fun I like the sets you came up with for them.
To the winners and honorable mentions, please leave me a reply as to what cards you would like me to favorite as your awards. Thank you for your time everyone, and for those that have not forgotten about me, I really mean this when I say thank you so much for not forgetting me since I've been away off and on so much. Life has been hard the past two years.
Well I'll be checking back to see what you guys want faved. Happy cardsmithing, and remember, when the street lights in New Capenna come on, it's time to get home. ??
