Shadow over Innistrad Mechanic Contest

Hello everyone! If you live under a rock, you may not know the next set, Shadows over Innistrad, is fast approaching and I personally am very excited! Their have been a couple of leeks of new cards as apparently a couple packs made it out early, so we now know the mechanics that will be in the set! That said, I want you to make a card in the Innistrad flavor with one or more of the following mechanics:

1. Double-Faced Cards: [Cause] Transform [Name].
2. Madness: Madness [cost] (If you discard this card, you may play it for its madness cost instead of putting it into your graveyard.)
3. Skulk: Skulk (This creature can't be blocked by creatures with greater power.)
4. Investigate: Investigate (Put a colorless Clue artifact token onto the battlefield with "2, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card.")
5. Delirium: Delirium--[Effect] as long as there are four or more card types among cards in your graveyard.

Thanks everyone, and have fun.

    Using three of the mechanics!
  • @Dramon Thanks for the entry! Check the comments on your card.
  • How many cards can we enter? Like 3 or so?
  • @MtgSalvader I'd say two at max.

Okay, thanks. Heres my first one, Delirious Horde:

(name & mechanic = purely coincidental. I thought it was a great name and wasnt thinking about the mechanic.)
  • @FangQuil neglected heirloom's tots an heirloom...not a scarecrow at all...
  • @MtgSalvader Thanks for the entry, it looks sweet! And about my card, just imagine it's a doll or something! It's apparently really difficult to find "possessed heirloom" art, okay!
  • Here is my original submission but fixed

  • Here is one that somehow even though it is completely balanced will still fall under the radar and won't be accepted as winning because it makes too much sense.
  • @Syrix Seems a little too good to me. White 2/1 goblin guide with two upsides instead of an, ehhhh... side.
  • here is a fun card based of off Descent Into Madness from the origonal Innistrad as well as the portal to phyrexia in Domminaria(Ice Age).

    Voices Of The Pit
    Sorcery
    2bb
    Target player discards two cards
Delirium-If you have four or more different card types in your graveyard, that opponent looses life equal to the combined converted mana cost of the cards discarded.
(flavor text)"I tried to find the reason of the voices in the dark, but I now fear the slightest shadow may be an entrance to hell."-Inquisitor arkthal, journal entry(/flavor text)
  • @FangQuil ...that comes in the flavor of mythic. Do you remember Serra Ascendant? Rare. Put it into any format with bonus HP and it becomes a 6/6 Flying, lifelinking, powerhouse for W.

Also see Kytheon that can for 2W become indestructible and also flips to a Planeswalker if the correct trigger is met.

See also: planar guide, loyal sentry, student of Warfare, Savannah lions, isamaru, Hound of Konda, Tethered Griffin.

Each of these I'm sure was considered "busted" in their own time.
  • not intentionally created for the challenge, but fits perfectly :)

  • @Syrix I can tell you that none of those cards were ever considered broken, just occasionally good. GOBLIN GUIDE is extremely good, and Possesed Conscript is just better. As for Serra Ascendant, it was errated to be 10 more than your starting life total, rather than 30 life. Mythic rares aren't even supposed to be inherently better than rares, if you look at any standard decklist, chances are you'll find few mythics. Mythics exist to have fun, splashy cards in sets that WotC would rather keep out of limited, rares are usually much more competitive. I still think the Conscript is too broken.

Well that was a ramble, thanks for reading it, if you did.

@FangQuil In a vacuum one could call it broken, because compared to similarly costed cards it is "inherently better" put this card into the rise of the eldrazi block. A set partially based on low costed defenders. It would not be worth a batted eyelash. In a standard deck, it can be dealt with with most forms of removal that are similarly costed. Shock, bolt, disfigure. It's a 2/1 whose "busted keyword abilities" become irrelevant after the turn he is cast!

And as for your comment regarding the rulings on Serra Ascendant, I'd check Gatherer again, or rather check it before you post such a blatantly WRONG statement. There is even an Oracle ruling regarding its uses in Two-Headed Giant.

Lastly, this contest was to meet a certain criteria, and I created a card that fit those criteria. If they wanted a vanilla common to fill the slot, they likely would've asked for one. This card does not appeal to you. Fine. "It's broken" fine. This card wasn't meant for you. Contrary to popular belief, wizards doesn't not make every card for every person. Case and point. I'm sure you thought Terra Stomper was one of the most sub-par cards ever created. In this case, I wasn't making a card that appealed to you.

And as much as I'd like to traverse through your cards and point out the glaringly obvious errors present there, I've got cards to create for people that appreciate them.

  • Actually @Syrix... This is his challenge, so if you made the card for this challenge, then it was created for him!
    XD
  • @Corwinn Indeed. Seems I should take my own advice and check the facts.
  • @Syrix In my opinion that card is incredibly over powered, and would break modern if introduced into it. This argument has gone on long enough, so I will not respond to any further related comments.
  • @blueprintmtg Yes, max two entries.
  • Second Entry, Went all out and made a mythic

  • Does this count? It's not particularly a SOI card, but I think it fits well. If it doesn't count, oh well, its lolz then.

  • (btw I was planning on giving it madness, but it's now got a better concept I think.)
  • http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/selhoff-assassin I thought that this one could be both a use of the Skulk mechanic as well as fuel for Madness.
  • Thanks for the entries everyone! This contest will close February the 28th for those that were wondering. @bluprintmtg, why is the account for your second entry Anonymous?
  • I forgot to log in on the page while creating it, which is a bummer, as I think it's a pretty cool one. I hope that because it references a new ability it doesn't look too sketchy.
