  the shapeshifting ability could be some sort of high-level play, @jabrewer. A lower-level ability might be */* power/toughness, where * is (card in zone, type of permenant, etc.). or X: this creature gets +1/-1 until end of turn type-effects. (Don't know the fan name , so I call it the Watercourser Effect, after this card: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=398540 ). If we take both effects into account, then the better tribe might be ooze or Elemental(water).

  Maybe I'm being too linear in my view of it. I suppose it could make sense to have shapeshifters represent the color but not necessarily make up the majority of that colors creatures.

  I think it's time to pump a bit more excitement into the air and possibly get a few more people to slap their thinking caps on and nominate tribes for this upcoming contest.
  
  The contest's prize pool is going to have 18 packs and 6 months of full premium cardsmith membership in it divided among the top 3 winners along with a few other fun things. You can still nominate tribes for the next few days so if you haven't already or if you have and just had some more ideas, get posting!

  @stormbreath Kavu are a staple creature type from Invasion block. They are carnivorous mutant reptiles that come in all colors, but predominantly red and green. The most popular at the time was Flametongue Kavu. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393837
