The Life Of A Planeswalker

the life of a planeswalker can be pretty tough - but also pretty freakin' awesome! However have you ever wonder what YOUR planeswalker history was or how he/she got to that point, well now's that time to think and create your own destiny!

the rules are some what simple and require you to do a few things:

1. You must enter at least 2 cards - and 1 of them must be a legendary creature, The other a planeswalker.

2. please do a small bio as a comment on your card, just a brief history of your card and how their planeswalker spark "ignited".

3. try to be consistent with mana cost, for example if one of your cards is u/b don't then change it to w/g for your next card.

4. that said if your planeswalker dies and is reanimated as a zombie (an example) you can change the colour from said w/u to b/u.

5. please also put what your planeswalker's deck type is (eg Raising the dead or Tokens).

6. Try not to do to many cards, i'd say 4 is the max but if you desperately want to do more you can.

There will be 2 categories to win as well as an overall winner:

Category 1 is flavor, the card with the best history/bio/fluff

Category 2 is the actual card synergy with each other/ your deck.

I will announce the winners on this page as I don't have access to -TROPHY- nor do I have enough accounts for favorites

Good luck but more importantly have fun!

  • Wait? So is this a transforming card competition, like to make an origins planeswalker, or two different cards? Also, my life is pretty boring, but I've created a planeswalker that I do a lot. Can I do him?
  • I think it's two separate physical cards, kinda like Karn.
  • Oh. Or Teferi.
  • Karnykarnykarnkarn
  • It's like your planeswalker before and after, so like if you want a planeswalker that was first a knight, you'd make a legendary creature that was your knight and then (on a separate card) you'd do a planeswalker
  • Wait, would the planeswalker be me, or one I made up?
  • good question
  • Either or, I don't mind
  • Okay, I'm making Kamus

    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/kamus-king-of-the-isles The creature

    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/kamus-deaths-toll The walker

The playstyle is Sacrifice for power.

History is in The creature's comments.
  • Awesome sauce, thanks!

Okay so my Planeswalker's name is Tala, the main protagonist from a set i'm working on called Luxarra. In short, Luxarra is a world freezing to death, and Tala is one of the few characters who believes it can be saved. The 4 cards included tell her story, but only the first three are actually part of the deck. The 4th is just the ending of her/Luxarra's story. It's a very cliché plot all told.

    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/tala-hope-for-peace Her original form.

http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/from-the-flames-of-anwe-1 Her rebirth, and the moment her spark ignites.

    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/tala-dignitary-4 The planeswalker.

http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/moment-of-rebirth The moment when she sacrifices herself to rebirth the dying plane.

The blue/white elf deck she's a piece of uses lifegain and elf permanents (creatures and enchantments both) to out-value opponents over the long game. Not your typical elf colors or deck.
  • Wasn't this the name of Kanye's newest album?
  • @strongbelieves
Only album I would buy, if it literally had a song about planeswalkers.
  • I'm pretty sure Kanye's new album is called "Help me, I'm beyond broke."

First entry, might do another one, but I'm glad I finally made these cards.
    First the creature: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/william-son-of-war
    Then the planeswalker: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/william-mage-of-war

So this is Bill William. At a young age he discovered a natural talent for fire magic. His parents hired a tutor who trained him (as best he could) to control and restrain himself and his magic. His chronic anxiety made life difficult for his family, made only worse when his father was called to fight in "the war."
The war went on for a while, and eventually they received word that his father died in battle. His mother became overcome with grief, and in a desperate attempt to restore normality to his life he began to practice black magic. The end goal to revive his father.

The magic he worked required strong life force to help fuel the spell, which inadvertently lead to the death of Bill's mother. Alone, scared, and burdened with the death of his mother on his hands, his spark ignited.
Over time he followed in his father's footsteps and acquired allies and learned to master his abilities. For now he is helping his home plane recover from the war that had claimed his father.

Edit: Forgot to mention the deck archetype. But it is basically just like, "good stuff mardu" but with some mini-archetypal aspects, such as red chaos, white/red small stuff, and w/b/r removal.
  • Thank you everyone who has entered, sorry if I can't see it immediately I'm located in England so I might be at a different time to you!

  • Okay, so my story is apparently too long for one post, so I'm gonna post it as two.

Keikai started life in a loving, yet very poor family. However, he was orphaned when the most feared crime crime gang on his plane, the Black Oath, murdered almost the entire population of the village his family lived in, including his parents. A slight upside was that he was only a baby at the time, meaning he never learned the truth about what happened. However, since the entire adult population had been murdered, that only left one young boy, no older than eight, to try to take care of him. The boy relocated himself and Keikai to the slums of the plane's capital where they lived for three years stealing food.

One day, when Keikai was only three, he was lured away from his older companion by the Black Oath, who promised him food and shelter. Not knowing any better and not knowing anything of what they had done to him in the past, he followed without hesitation.

From there, the Black Oath raised Keikai in their tyrannical, terrible ways, imprinting on him only the worst. The harsh lifestyle he was exposed to at the Black Oath's headquarters was the only he could remember. Eventually, any memories from the time before he was brought in were quite literally beaten out of him.

The Black Oath trained Keikai as an assassin and he took to it well. It quickly became apparent he had a genius for tactical planning, which came in handy as the Black Oath was trying to cause political turmoil by systematically murdering its leaders and then come in and seize control.

As Keikai grew older, he quickly rose in power and respect throughout the gang. However, when he was a young man, during one assassination mission, hei was caught. He had intended to assassinate a church leader. However, the Angel Tenshi, an angel who could purify souls and give second chances with a special torch that burned with heavenly light, had warned the church leader of this. Once caught, Keikai was stripped of weapons, brought to a cell in the church, and bound by magic to insure he didn't escape. The church leader was going to bring Keikai to the authorities, but Tenshi instructed the man to leave him there for a night and then have him sent to fight in a war that had arisen from the black oath's assassinations.

Tenshi knew of Keikai's background, she knew he stayed with the Black Oath because they were a sort of cruel family to him. The night of Keikai's capture, while he was asleep, Tenshi visited him. She sent Keikai a vision of what he didn't remember: the murder of his parents. She then shone her torch onto Keikai's body, purifying his soul, clearing his thoughts so that he could have a correct sense of right and wrong instead of the skewed evil the Black Oath had taught him. It was time for Keikai to redeem himself.

Keikai awoke the next morning in shock at the visions he saw and the reality he had been blind to until now. He had unknowingly been working for the same group who had murdered the parents he had never known he had. He knew some sort of being had caused what he saw, but he didn't know who. However, there was one thing he was sure of: he had been changed by what he saw, he now knew the magnitude of what he had done. Upon the realization of all this, he cried, regretting his entire life up to this point.

The church leader he had tried to assassinate the night before approached Keikai soon after. Upon seeing the man, Keikai cried, "please! Take my life! I don't deserve to walk among the living anymore. I have done unspeakable atrocities, taken countless lives, and helped set off a war!. I don't want to live with this."

The church leader silently shook his head no, remembering Tenshi's instructions. "You are going to have to live with it, at least for a little while longer. You may have helped to create a vast war, yes, but you also have the power to help end it," he started, "as punishment for your crimes, you will be sent off to fight in this war. What you do as a soldier is your choosing. Maybe if you're lucky enough, the Black Oath will take your life."

That's when Keikai realized the opportunity fighting in the war gave him. He could redeem himself in the eye of the public and seek revenge on those who murdered his parents proceeded to manipulate him into a false sense of right and wrong. All he said in reply was, "thank you."

Keikai had gained a new point of view in life and gladly joined the forces in the effort to stop the Black Oath's coup d'état. He fought in many battles, gaining prestige and glory as he did. The same skills he used as an assassin in the Black Oath became invaluable to his superiors. The tactical plans he recommended were often extremely successful. He knew the Black Oath better than any other man there, but he kept his past a complete secret. Many began to believe he was some sort of nobility from a far off land.

As the war began to shift in the favor of the forces who opposed the Black Oath, Keikai was given command of a small troop. Unbeknownst to him, however, was that Tenshi had inspired his superior to give him this command as a test. In his first battle as a commander, Keikai and his troops made a daring attempt to kill one of the higher-up members of the Black Oath, ending in their success. He didn't loose a single man that day.

The night after the battle, Keikai found himself having trouble sleeping. He felt like he had done something significant in all his time as a warrior, but he wasn't sure it was enough. He was pretty convinced he could never redeem himself for what he had done. Then, suddenly, his train of thought was interrupted as a brilliant light erupted, blinding him monetarily. When his vision cleared, Keikai saw Tenshi looking over him. He looked at the angel in surprise, getting the feeling this angel had been a part of his life in some way.

Tenshi explained to Keikai who she was and how she had visited him that fateful night when he had all those visions. She went on to explain her motivation for allowing him a chance at redemption. She finished with telling Keikai that it was time for him to be forgiven for his past. She gave Keikai the power to rally troops and move men to tears with his words. She then told Keikai that although he had been forgiven, the war wasn't over, but whether he stayed or not now was his choice. Keikai eagerly replied that he was going to continue fighting for all the people who had lost their lives to the Black Oath. Pleased with Keikai's response, she vanished, leaving him with a sword that was infused with some of the heavenly light for her torch in her place.

Keikai used this sword to lead his troops to victory as the Black Oath were getting closer and closer to defeat. However, the Black Oath still had one trick up their sleeve. Their leader, Taghia was willing to sacrifice everything to gain the power he was swiftly loosing. He was biding time to build up the power he would need to cast his ultimate spell. When performed, all life he could see would turn to death, even if it meant killing the remainder of his followers.

Thus the night before the fateful battle came. Tenshi had found out about the spell and warned Keikai of it but instructed him to tell nobody of it and not create worry. She also told him to turn down the right to lead troops, for the safety of others and to draw less attention to himself. For this battle specifically, she gave Keikai a spear infused with angelic powers that could pierce any armor. He needed to kill Taghia before he could cast his spell. The destiny of the entire plane rode on his abilities as an assassin. When morning came and Keikai's troops came looking for him, he was already gone. He left a note explaining that the leader of the Black Oath would be a part of this battle and that killing him would effectively end the war.

Keikai was already advancing towards where the enemy would be so that he could locate Taghia quickly. When he saw the enemy on the horizon, he paused, knowing how important this act would be to not only the war, but to the history of the plane. Taghia didn't bother to hide himself. He came in the font line, heavily armored and on top of a titanic war beast. He carried no weapon, but Keikai knew why. By this point, Keikai could see the troops he had left behind for their safety on the opposite horizon. He went to the side so Taghia wouldn't notice him and proceeded silently. Although his weapon was an angelic spear, this was still an assassination and needed to be done quickly.

Keikai noticed Taghia had stopped and fallen back while his troops advanced forward. He could see that a shadowy sphere was forming in Taghia's hands. He was charging the spell, waiting to wipe out the entire enemy in a single blow. Taghia had hidden himself only a couple feet away from the tyrant. His troops and the Black Oath were about to clash. That must have been the moment Taghia was waiting for.

Keikai rushed towards Taghia, hoping to catch him off guard, but Taghia noticed him and used a little of the black magic he had charged up to try to fend off the assailant. Keikai saw the armies clashed and new he had one last chance to stop Taghia. He rushed him head on right as Taghia released the spell. Keikai drove his spear into the heart of Taghia, causing him to loose focus of the spell, severely cutting its strength and radius. Only Keikai was affected.

As Keikai drove the spear into the tyrant who was responsible for the deaths and losses of so many, time seemed to slow. He knew he had been affected by the spell and was going to die soon. However, the sacrifice was worth it. He had just saved the entire army. Then, suddenly, when time seemed to freeze to a standstill, he heard a voice in his head, "you have redeemed yourself, completely and without any thoughts of further reward here or hereafter. You are worthy of the power about to be bestowed upon you."

Suddenly, a pair of white feathered wings burst out of Keikai's back and filling him with life to fend off Taghia's spell. Keikai realized who the voice was and what they had done to him. Tanshi had transformed him into an angel. The thought of complete redemption was a lot to handle. Heobserved the dead tyrant lain before him, as time sped up, but he quickly realized that not only did time seem to be speeding up, but he was slipping from what seemed like reality itself. Then there was flash and he found himself hovering over a grassy field. He wasn't sure where he was or why he was here, but he knew this wasn't anywhere he had ever been. It took him a moment to process what had happened, but he eventually remembered something. He had heard stories of beings able to travel to unheard of worlds at will, palneswalkers, is what he had heard them referred to as. Was he one of these planeswalkers?

To test his theory, he attempted to replicate how he had left his home plane. Eventually, he found himself slipping from reality again. He emerged above the fighting troops, spear in hand. All eyes were on him as he landed in front of his men. There was a moment of complete silence as people took in what Keikai had become. Then, without hesitation, he charged with his men towards the remaining Black Oath, knowing that when he was done here, another plane would likely need his assistance.

Cards (by order of their appearance in the story):
*I'm sorry there's so many. The story I cam up with is so long and I wanted to try to hit every key point. If you were to only consider four of the nine I'd look at Systematic Murdering, Keikai, Taghia, and Keikai (planeswalker).
    - Riders of the Black Oath: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/riders-of-the-black-oath?list=user (the Black Oath that took Keikai away and trained him as an assassin.)
    - Systematic Murdering: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/systematic-murdering?list=user (showing Keikai's work as an assassin as well as the moment right before he got caught.)
    - Tenshi, Guide of Light: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/tenshi-guide-of-light?list=user (Tenshi herself.)
    - Sword of the Holy Flame: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/sword-of-the-holy-flame-1?list=user (the sword bestowed upon Keikai after he was forgiven.)
    - Keikai, Forgiven and Graced: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/keikai-forgiven-and-graced?list=user (Keikai's Legendary creature card, taking place during his first battle after he had received the sword.)
    - Taghia, Black Oath's Origin: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/taghia-black-oaths-origin-1?list=user (Taghia himself. His abilities are supposed to be a flavorful representation of him building the black oath and his ultimate spell.)
    - Spear of Angelic Purity: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/spear-of-angelic-purity-1?list=user (the weapon Tenshi gave Kenkai to kill Taghia.)
    - Angelic Destiny: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/angelic-destiny-2?list=user (A card printed in M12 that I thought would work really well in Keikai's story, representing the moment his planeswalker spark ignited.)
    - Keikai, Redeemed by Light: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/keikai-redeemed-by-light-1?list=user (Keikai as an angelic planesalker.)
    ---
    Playstyles:
Because of how diverse Keikai's life was and the fact that I intended to make the cards as flavorful as possible, there isn't one main playstyle, but three smaller ones.
    1. The black oath is more focused towards EDH with Taghia being the general. Their cards usually involve creature destruction, deathtouch, and life loss.
    2. As a human, Keikai is focused towards a RW equipment deck with himself and two legendary equipment cards to aid his troops.
    3. The angel cards are focused on the traditional angel effects in MTG, primarily focusing on giving creatures keyword buffs.

  • Holy Sh*t @Arceus8523
    Awesome fluff i love it!!
  • Oh, and if it isn't obvious from the initiate (creature) which is: A 4+color deck dealing with mana, life, counters, and damage (ran out of crafting room, shame). Not mentioned though, but hinted at is creature tokens (nasty little X tokens). So, I see this deck not for tournaments (If you can bring it out, you should have won already), but a "fun" deck where you pull out the big calculators. That said, if you want to risk it, it is probably best with Mycosynth Lattice, Xenograft + Vigilante Justice (or something darker (blacker) than these two) + Druid's call (Or something similar) + Coat of Arms (or Cathar's Crusade), Mana echoes (if you are really crazy like me, otherwise something sane like Viridian Joiner+again Xenograft+Coat of Arms), Angelic Chorus, Prototype Portal, Sculpting Steel, and maybe Garruk's Packleader or similar. So, what you get (which won't probably win any tournaments for you, it's too slow) is something approaching a Xanatos Masochist, where whatever non-lethal thing you do, they grow from it, and furthermore, exponentially, and then help themselves to a share of their own pain for infinite combos.
  • I think Arceus won the rpg, but I shall make an attempt (however vain) to compete using a deck of 59 cards (60 being the crafted card), all played on the same turn, like an MTG Solitaire game, where you have only 1 turn and must make legal moves only (on a side note, I am sure it is illegal to arrange your deck for tournaments). It may take a while, so let me post this first.
  • Sorry, need to edit. I keep on mistaking "Plenteous Bounty" for Boon Reflection. The other cards are okay.

Graybark, a treefolk shaman on the plane of Aurika had a falling out with Amriel, the leader of the Aurikan angels, over a land dispute. Amriel challenged Graybark to a duel, and Graybark, thinking his mastery of plant magic would easily win him the challenge, accepted.
The challenge miraculously ended in a draw. Amriel was the better figher, but Graybark summoned a large golem made out of plants. Amriel destroyed it, but it was able to knock her out of the sky, and small viny lifeforms held her down.
Later, when Graybark was in his home grove recovering, a black-winged angel shot out of the sky and went for Graybark. Graybark tried to fend it off, but surprise was on the angel's side. Its swords fell towards Graybark's head...
...and Graybark reappeared on the plains of Tarkir.
The first planar jump threw Graybark into a state of shock. This couldn't be the afterlife...could it? The wind-scoured plains of Tarkir seemed a strange afterlife to a newly aware planeswalker
Fortunately, a strange man who called himself He Who Wanders filled Graybark in on what he now was. Graybark planeswalked for a decade or two before the Mending ripped through the multiverse. Worried about his home plane, Graybark returned to Aurika to find that demons had come to his beloved home.
Even though Graybark mistrusts angels (especially Amriel), he fights alongside them to destroy the demons he loathes.

  • When does this close? I'd like to enter some stuff but I don't know if I can get it all ready by the closing
  • I had cards to spare so if you want me to do the other Mait I have (occuring slightly later), let me know.
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/mait-of-infinite-legion?list=user

Thank you sir, for buying my drink. Hard Times it is for such weary bones as myself. You heard my argument with him, I am sure. In too many cases, they call me crazy, you know, for talking about a planeswalker who I call Mait the Infinite Vortex, who had power enough to destroy any number of planes. "No one can be that powerful, they say, surely, other planeswalkers would know and take action." But, you bought me a drink, and have sounded interested (which is a hard thing nowadays) in my side, so let me tell you of him.

Let me tell you of one of the times when Urza Planeswalker and Barrin were away from the university of Tolaria. If any who had been there had stayed, perhaps, no, certainly, the Phyrexians wouldn't have overrun and destroyed their great Academy.
But I am getting ahead of myself.

As you know, it is common practice for many armies to send out their scouts, often their cheapest. Yawgmoth's Phyrexians were no exception. For some last minute planning, they sent out 3 Phyrexian Walkers (or were they some relic of some time that may be? Scholars may never know). Due to unfortunate events (mostly poor planning of a general (or was it a lieutenant?) who would soon be executed and NOT reanimated), those Phyrexian Walkers were destroyed before reaching their destination. The Academy found their remains, and after some tinkering brought them to life. Not knowing of the incoming invasion (silly of them, I am sure), they made the 3 to become servants to help the Academy.

    (Pause to refill cup)

With their servitude, the Academy was able to finish of one of the Mana Vaults they were working on with mana to spare. They tried out the Mana Vault, and found using it produced enough man to finish another Vault, and using the mana from both the vaults and the Academy, they had enough challenge to have a Breakthrough which granted them access to more projects with mana to spare. But they didn't have much, but using half of what they had, they were able to make the University hum again with mana, with a handy and quick spell called Twiddle.

Using most of the mana they held, they saw a scroll they wanted to experiment with. To their surprise they called forth a Vedalken Archmage, which they immediately employed as one of their professors. Finding they were running low on mana, again, they used half of what was left to make another Mana Vault. The Archmage looked at the Vault and haggled for the opportunity to look at all artifacts the might bring in, in exchange for some scrolls he had brought. The Academy readily agreed, on the provision that they still keep those artifacts. They activated the Mana Vault and used some of the new mana for one last Mana Vault.

    (Pause to refill cup)

You know that general (I think it was a general), who ordered those 3 Phyrexian Walkers? Well, I think he (she or it, it doesn't matter) must have ordered one more of those things to check on the others, and came to the same end. This time, I am sure they heard the "clunk" as it fell through a rift into the Academy. Again, they reassembled it (It didn't take too much time at all, you know), and again they sent it off to run errands in the University. They didn't want to ever run out of mana after the last two times, and seeing they were given a scroll to summon something big and interesting from the Archmage's home (I'm not sure if the Archmage knew about them, he might have only had the scrolls), they spent a little of their mana to again cause the Academy to thrum with mana (of course it was by Twiddle. It's a handy spell you know.)

Well, they started the empowering the scroll, and they found to their surprise, it released a cloud of spores that engulfed everything in the Academy. Because they spent the mana, a series of metallic fungal columns (Yes, I know it made a Mycosynth Lattice, but they didn't know then, you see) grew to the roof of the Academy. It furthermore grew on them in odd patches of metal, which made everything that lasts interesting enough to the Archmage. Suddenly, they saw it didn't matter any more, the specifics of the color of the mana, or rather they learned how to work around it, and in this realization, they found they lost more than half of their mana to an odd, thrumming sound. Pausing to listen, it seemed to come from their remaining mana, an echo hinting at the potential for more mana through these so-called Mana Echoes.

    (Pause to refill cup)

After the Echoes faded, they turned around and saw the Lattice growing a body. And, like a ripe fruit, this mycosynth statue (Yes, yes it was a Mycosynth Golem), fell down. And the thrumming came back, which opened the eyes of the Golem. At a loss, they figured it could order around the Phyrexian Walkers, while they checked their mana, and confirmed that said creature must have caused the mana to grow. "Well, one creature made it thrum," they thought," how about a second?" so they pulled out a scroll and put in the required amount of mana, and summoned an initiate (intern, really. It's not like he thought himself special.) named Mait Deere, which caused the same thrumming and increase of mana.

You see, Mait was in the middle of class, when he was pulled out. A nice kid he was, but bullied, cause he didn't exactly fit in. Even as a fledgling wizard, his faith in some dead guy, and his random acts of kindness (or maybe it was his scruples about black magic) caused him some grief from the other students. So, one day while he bullied, he was wishing he was somewhere else, almost anywhere else really (smart enough to realize that some places aren't better, but naive enough to not factor in time), He fell through a portal and landed in the Academy, with some metallic spores growing out of him. Thankfully, the rest of the class just forgot him.
