The Best Bean

The best bean is the vanilla bean (in my opinion, anyway; also for the sake of this joke). Anyway, the theme of this challenge is to make something that works with vanilla creatures, like Muraganda Petroglyphs. It can be any card type, so go crazy! The contest ends Friday evening.

Word(s) to the wise: in order to be a vanilla creature, it can't have any abilities at all. Keywords disqualify you (Serra Angel), and even things that don't work on the battlefield count (Durkwood Baloth). Auras and equipments can be tricky. If they use the words "gain" or "have", the creature is no longer vanilla, but if it doesn't, you're good. Compare Cessation to Guard Duty. If you have any questions about your card, just ask!

No more than one entry please, although feel free to revise or even replace your card as many times as you want. As long as you only have one entry by Friday evening, I'm happy.

This grants an ability to creatures without any (the wording is "Creatures with no other abilities have"):

My entry - an aura for the unsung heroes on the battlefield :)

*Updated from original with new mechanics
  • @mintyfreshmana
Although I get what you intended, as written it falls off as soon as it enters the battlefield. Auras only remain attached as long as the condition (usually 'is a creature') remains true; since yours specifies 'creature without abilities' but gives exalted, as soon as it resolves it disqualifies itself.
  • @Beeswax I see your point - perhaps indicating it has no abilities at time it dealt damage?

Hope the wording on this isn't off. Great challenge.
  • @mintyfreshmana
    I would do

    Unexpected Hero WW
    Enchantment
When a creature with no abilities deals damage, Unexpected Hero becomes an Aura with enchant creature. Attach it to that creature.
Enchanted creature is legendary, gets +2/+2, and has exalted.

it's the closest I can think of.
  • That works! Am I correct that would also allow it to be on the field in advance? It would then be triggered by the conditional damage, and could even be turned into a "may" condition which could be used on blockers as well?
  • @Beeswax updated in my post above (and here), changed the mechanics around to work in a much more intuitive way, thanks! http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/unexpected-hero-1

    I think this is the most complicated card I've ever made. I hope it's not broken. ;-;
  • Judging time! As an interesting side note, almost all of you made cards that change, target, or otherwise affect your ability-less creatures, rather ones that care about them. Moving on!

    Kithkin Schoolmaster @Faiths_Guide

Super cute card! (I like kithkin, as creepy as they get in Shadowmoor). The mechanic also works interestingly, and the idea of an elephant learning first strike from a kithkin makes me happy inside. On an asthetic level, I might prefer KSm to have "{2}: Target creature without abilites gains...", just because it removes the need for that exclusion clause. That's just me, though.

Again, I like the choice of effects, and you've covered a wide variety of the things that green wants to do: spam tokens, ramp, and alpha strike. It's a little weird to grant reach just during your turn, since it won't be blocking until after it loses the ability, but it's an elegant card nonetheless.

    Unexpected Hero @mintyfreshmana
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/unexpected-hero-1
First of all, the flavor here, of the most generic possible creature turning into a legend, is solid gold, and the art works well with it. The mechanics are well-chosen, it just has some technical flaws. It still falls off when the new turn ends and the creature hasn't dealt damage, and the last ability (though again super flavorful) disqualifies itself, since as soon as they have exalted they no longer qualify and lose it.

    Imperious Fealty @Corwinnn
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/imperious-fealty?list=set&set=10088
On the surface of it, this is flavorful, but WAAAAY overcosted: it's a worse 5-drop Soul Sister that can tutor by spending massive amounts of mana and tokens. The combo potential, however, is through the roof: Ixidron, Humility, Polymorphist's Jest, Sudden Spoiling, and the like turn it into a devastating removal engine, and you could run a truly cruel Orzhov bleed deck with it. This is the only entry that doesn't focus on empowering creatures: it HUMBLES them. I like it a lot, although the lack of a non-abusive use case is a little worrying (although it's never stopped me before).

    Rustic Charm @Animist

I didn't immediately make the 'oh it's a three-pick-one card' connection: I assumed that it was some sort of farm-related enchantment. Anyway, this would go RIGHT into my vanilla zoo deck (Stomping Ground, Kird Ape, Plains, Watchwolf, Mountain, Woolly Thoctar, Forest, Muraganda Petroglyphs, clean up flipped table): it's versatile, effective, and solves a lot of the problems that vanilla aggro decks have. Might be a wee bit too strong in that situation, but whatever. Also the only nonpermanent entry, which is interesting.

    Iona's Gift @Zanmato
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/ionas-gift
Nice last-minute save with the final clause. Also an interesting take on Angelic Destiny, playing well with white's 'save the helpless' theme. It might be a little weak, especially with Echo: it's competing with Eldrazi Monument and Levitation, though I suppose in counterpoint it can really screw over a mono-colored deck. Nice!

    And our winner is...

    Corwinn!
    Yay!
As always, no prizes but internet points*!
    Double yay!

    *Points not redeemable.

Thanks so much for all your entries, and happy smithing!
