How to Make Booster Packs Even Better

Hey guys!

One of my favorite things to do with MTG, is to open booster packs. I've loved it ever since I started playing Magic when I was 11 (I'm 12 now). I've sometimes wondered, "How can I make cracking packs EVEN better?" Well, I started this discussion to answer that question, and to have you guys add your thoughts to it :)

  • One thing I would do would be:

Whenever you open a pack, sort the rare/mythic/foils out and search the medium price on them MTGPrice (http://www.mtgprice.com/). Whatever that price is, round it up to the nearest whole number, and write down how much that is. ex:

you get a $3.75 dollar rare
    you round it to $4
take out the dollar sign, 4
that's how many points you get :)

When you crack packs with friends, you can see who gets the most points. If you crack packs alone, you can see how many packs it takes to reach 100 :)
  • Pack Wars. Each player opens a pack and shuffles it face down. That's your library. Starting hand is zero cards, draw 1 card a turn. You start with 10 lands that produce any color. You can't lose by running out of cards. You can play with any number of packs, but it's quick and fun with one apiece.
  • oh that seems fun!
  • I've had times where we each open a pack, then whoever pulled the best card, (after discussion and agreement all around,) gets to take their pick of a common, uncommon, or token from each other person's booster.

Yay for pulling Sword of War and Peace.
  • How to make booster packs better? Even more booster packs.
  • Draft. Always Draft.
  • ^ to @L0NEvvolf, drafting is the best. 40 card constructed is such a fun format, it should replace Standard at FNM (that's right, I went there). It takes out the overly competitive nature of pre-built decks and replaces it with crafting all on a very fair and level playing field.
  • Here are my favorite ways to use booster packs:

    DRAFT (duhh)

WIZARD'S TOWER: Take a fat pack, open each pack FACE DOWN, take out all of the tokens, and shuffle the land pack into the cards. Each player shares that deck and graveyard. Other than that, everything is the same. It is really cool to get the winning Mythic rare in the middle of the game, especially when you didn't know about it!

TIME CAPSULE: Take an unopened booster pack, and not open it for around two or three years. It sounds strange, but it gives me something to think about when you are absolutely bored.

[me and my friends haven't come up with a name for this]: Take a random storebought deck, save the booster packs (or more if you have them), then after the first game, open a booster pack, and switch out cards. Then keep on playing until you have run out of booster packs. Whoever won the most is the winner!

ARCHETYPE: Open a booster pack. You have five minutes to build a 60-card common-and-uncommon deck using all of your cards from your booster pack. May seem like a short time limit, but it really helps out with deck building!

OPEN THEM: It seems really boring, but a lot of people do it for some reason or another.
  • I really like that Wizard's Tower idea @Gelectrode
  • @Gelectrode for the unnamed format, how about Momentum?

yah I like @Biblio2's idea for the name @Gelectrode
  • @Gelectrode, I've been making a Time Capsule of three booster packs from every set since the original Innistrad block. Its quite a full box now! I'll keep adding to it until it reaches "treasure chest" size, then decide what to do.
  • I have an idea. Four-sided Arlinn card pack! (Reference from a comment on my Morogins discussion)
  • @mtgcardsmith, Including MM and MM2? Either ways, that will be a fun week of drafting!
  • @mintyfreshmana At my LGS for FNM there is no standard. A few people show up just to play EDH but the vast majority of people go there to draft. I never see anyone there just to play standard or modern. I guess I am lucky with a great LGS. ^_^
  • @Gelectrode When I pick up a fat pack this is what I do with it. I take 3 random packs (actually, I usually take the 3 that are left), my 17 year old son takes 3 random packs and my 12 year old daughter takes 3 random packs. I split the land up between the three of us and we shuffle our packs together and play a couple games to see who's packs were best.
  • New format I brainstormed:

1): Open booster pack face down. Take out token, then shuffle. Do not draw a hand of 7 cards.

2): At the beginning of your turn, reveal the top card of your library, Cast it without paying its mana cost.

3): If you would draw a card/reveal a card except there are no cards in your library, shuffle your graveyard into your library instead.
  • That's really cool @Gelectrode! I'm going to use that with my friend @RyanNut!
  • @TheFriendlyGeek, it was inspired by a format my friends used to play: You may lay any number of lands each turn and you drew ten cards instead of one. Games usually lasted 2 minutes.
  • heh lol. One time I played with my bro and when I had a slightly small collection (400 cards per color) we chose one color and that was our library. We both drew 20 cards and (since there was no lands) played everything for free. That game lasted in 2 turns or so :P
  • @Gelectrode not including those sets as of yet, though it would be much more inexpensive to buy them now, hmm...

Here's the full updated list as of 6/8/16:

I personally wouldn't use mtgprice.com. I would use a more reliable source that tells you the specific sell price. Also I started when I was 10 :P Ever since then I've bought so much MTG stuff! Singles, gift boxes, sooooo many boosters, promos, treasure troves (boxes with 1000 cards- I have two), gift boxes, special deck boxes (the ones that hold dice, a 100 card deck, and another deck), mini troves, a toronto grand prix playmat, an event deck, intro deck, from the vault: annihilation... honestly.... the list goes on forever.
  • @mtgcardsmith I have a Fallen Empires box unopened.
  • @strongbelieves - Shut Up! I totally wish I had never opened mine (mostly from the disappointment)
    XD
  • @Gelectrode you can't do Wizard Tower with SOI or Eldritch Moon because of pesky transformers.
  • Robots in da skies!
