Cardsmith RPG?

Anyone wanna do an RPG on this thread? I can GM! All you have to do is make a card to represent your character, or pick an existing card you already made, post it in this thread, and we'll go from there!

  • Sounds fun. How would it work?
  • I was thinking I would set up a scenario, and your characters would work together to solve it. When you want to have a discussion with an NPC, I would play the NPC's role. Fights would use die rolls (honor system.) I'm not too sure myself, so your input would be great!
  • I have some experience with pen-and-paper rpgs like D&D, Cthulhu and earthdawn and computer games like the gothic and risen series. I loved that, but these games focus on character development and different roles, the caracters can have in a group. I am not sure, how to convert that for magic cards. Nevertheless, I'd like to try that.
  • Yeah I play DND and am currently DMing for some friends. It would not be nearly as structured as pen-and-paper RPGs, and I wouldn't use actual Magic Cards to fight, just as character inspiration. You could make a card to represent your character, and use that as a baseline for your RP.
  • Since my D&D group fell apart not so long ago and I already miss playing, I'd be with you. I'd just like to roughly know, how it could work. Is there leveling up with new abilities, the character would get? Should these abilities be represented by mtg abilities or by feats like D&D has them? Are there different character classes? Should it be as complicated and structured in many small parts with different spells, feats and skills or should it have a more global skill system that needs a whole bunch of responsible roleplaying? Sorry, I like your idea so much, I have a thousand questions!
  • It would be incredibly unstructured. Responsible roleplaying is key. You would be allowed to try anything, and I'd tell you what you'd have to roll to succeed. Not sure how combat would work yet. Thoughts?

Ok, unstructured sounds exciting. The caracters could have base points from 1 to whatever you like in attack, defense and magic, depending on the character level. You could have the pcs and nps roll for attack, defense and magic with 1d4, 1d6 or 1d8, depending if you are poor, average or good at the special skill?
When building the character, you could have to decide, which 'skill' gets which die for example. When attacking for example, you roll your die you add the base points, you have and check if the attack roll plus base points is higher than the defense roll plus base points, the character has, you're fighting with. Damage could also be 1d4 to 1d8 depending on what kind of weapon or spell you use.
  • seems great! amazed you thought that up on the fly.
  • Thanks. My boyfriend is creating a card game and we were thinking about different mechanics for it, so I had some ideas already sitting around in my head :D

(Changed fighting into attack, to use the terms, I used in the post before.)

I'd suggest another skill like dexterity for things like climbing, juggling, stunts of all kind and things like sleight of hand and picking locks.

Another idea is, that you can use light weapons, when you have attack poor, medium weapons when you have attack average and twohanded weapons, when you have attack good. Light weapons are daggers and stuff and deal 1d4 damage, medium weapons are longswords and simmilar stuff and deal 1d6 damage and twohanded weapons are stuff like greathammers and deal 1d8 damage.
Same with armor. Light armor (leather) may be used with defense poor. With them, you may substract 1 point of damage, you were dealt, medium armor (chainshirt) with defense average and you may substract 2 points of damage, and have to substract 1 point from what you have as dexterity. Heavy armor (full plate) with defense good. Substract 2 points of damage and 1 point of dexterity.
Poor magic lets you cast small spells like minor illusions (small flame bright like a candle) and harm spells with little effect (electrical spark, dealing 1d4 damage), average magic lets you cast better spells with a wider range of effects (alternate property changes color, size or materila of things, ice spear deals 1d6 of damage) good magic lets you create things and target a couple of people or things (a weapon appears in your hand or a fireball hits your enemies dealing 1d8 damage to one person or 1d4 damage to several enemies). Dexterity should work just like magic, so it could grade the things you can proberly do.

When creating the character, I suggest, you normally have average everywhere. When you choose to have good in a skill, you have to have poor in another skill. Every skill could begin with a base point value of 1. Whenever a character levels up, you can spend 2 points to increase the base points, you have in a skill.

What kind of setting do you want? I guess, fantasy, but are we gonna use the mtg backround?
  • Ok then. I'm in. :-D I played a lot of Dračí Doupě(Dragons and Dungeons in other countries).
This will be my character: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/master-of-the-shifting-sands
  • Here is mine:

    http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/shadow-trickster

Her name is Kiptra and she grew up in a large city as the daugter of a wealthy merchant family. Her parents died as a plauge killed hundreds of people in that town and had to make a living all by herself. She isn't really evil, but rather neutral and uses her talents to make money. She's quite dexterous and tricky, since she's not very strong.
She appears to be sly and cold as ice, but on the inside, she's just misttrustful and affraid of being robbed or worse. Actually, she's just looking for friends and when you gained her trust, she's very loyal and follows you wherever you lead.
As a matter of fact, she knows that what she's doing is not really the best way to make a living, but up to now, She didn't find a reason (or a worthy person) that could make her change her live.

Here her stats (if we take the system I suggested)
    attack: 1 poor (1d4), defense: 1 average (1d6), magic: 1 average (1d6) dexterity: good (1d8)
weapons: two daggers (damage 1d4), armor: light armor (leather, -1 damage)

I totally forgot that i should give some info about my character. :-D

Her name is Lina Trutharm. People just call her Lina. She was born in a small vilage near mountains as a daughter of masters of the monk order called Shifting Sands. She was trained by her father in way of balance. She is really fast and evasive at the cost of her strength.
Appearance: She has short white hair and very skinny body. She has leather armor in golden and brown colour. She is quite mysterious and most people only know her name. She don't want to talk about her past. It almost seems that she is trying to hide something.
Even though balance is her greatest strength it can become a thing that pulls her down with rest of her friends.

    Alignment: Lawful good

    Attack: Poor
    Defense: Below Average
    Magic: Very Poor
    Dexterity: Excellent

    Quite good thinker

    Cons:
Using Fist Weapons decreases her Dexterity
Becomes furious when somebody metions her past(!!Careful about it!!)
    Closed in upon itself.

  • amazing! I'll be back to start it up later today, probably.
  • Will OP deliver?
  • I think he gave up on this project :(
  • I hope he did not. I want to play since my Dragons and Dungeons group no longer exist.
  • Mine neither. I guess you don't live in Bremen, germany?
  • Sadly i do not, well if you ever move to Davis, California then we can play some D&D.
  • California sounds great. But I fear, I won't move there too soon :(
  • I live in Tábor, Czech Republic. Problem is that my Deutsch is so bad. :/
  • If that's the only problem, we can play in english. So you're invited to come to Bremen to establish a new D&D group.
  • My second problem though is my medical condition. I have diabetes and that's what i can't ignore. :-/
  • Oh, my boyfriend has, too. Was diagnosed a few month ago. That's really something, that shouldn't be ignored.
