Challenge: create your own whole new CREATURE TYPE!
I can't believe I couln't find an already existing challenge like this, but maybe I just have missed it while searching.
So, despite I'm relatively new here, I want to challenge you all to invent a completely new creature type.
RULES:
* maximum two creature types per cardsmith as your final entry - if you design more, just make clear which ones should be your entry
* you can make as many cards as you want per creature type - I'll judge based on my general impression of all cards with that type; so more cards could be good, drawing a more precise picture of what your creature type wants to be about; or it could dilute a strong first impression with vacuous additions. It's your decision to make!
* new cards would be nice (new means: card's date is Aug 17th 2016 or later), but it's not mandatory - but in doubt, this could be the thumb on the scale
* artists must be credited (very few exceptions just with good reasons)
* the challenge presumably ends on Aug 31st 2016
OPTIONS:
* your creature type could be humanoid or it could be animal
* it could be in one color or in many
* it could be a clear cycle or wildly mixed in rarity, colors and CMC
* it could come with a new, customized mechanic
* it could use an existing mechanic
* it could come with supplementary tribal spells (but they do not really count for the judgement)
* if you want to push it really hard, just ignore the whole "creature type" demand and make a set with different creature types, but that's obviously still the same creature ... "species" --- role model: the Arcbound guys (but if everyone did that now, it would take whe whole fun out of it)
* and if you want to make it easier for me, you can write a little summary about your creature type: what's it about? why is it designed this way? what does the mechanics you used mean and represent? on which plane do they live? etc. etc.
CRITERIA:
* ingenuity
* artwork (recognition value)
* playability & balancing
* style
* wording & spelling
PRIZES:
* I'll fav every card I like (... duh)
* 3rd: three favs of your choice and a follow
* 2nd: five favs of your choice and a follow, plus I'll make a card with your creature type myself if you'd like me to do so
* 1st: seven favs of your choice and a follow, plus I'll make at least one card with your creature type myself if you'd like me to do so
Now have a lot of fun and show me some great new critters!
DISCLAIMER: I think I'll design my own creature type while this goes on and I'll throw the cards in here to show them, to give some examples (but not as the only way to do it of course, you still can - and should - surprise me), and to receive some feedback as well.

But if that's the only issue, I can be quite proud as a german I think.
I would link you as @Feyamius
If that makes sense
It seems to me that it's just one particular animal, not a whole type. But if you want to make a whole species out of it, I won't hold you back.
Okay, enough with the nonsense, show me some cards!
Well, I made this first... I'll make the Catoblepas later
There are technically two new species housed within this project set: Lithorians and Terracadas.
If you must put your focus into only one of those (even though the creatures are closely realated), make sure it is the Lithorians.
Here's the set:

I also have a discussion page here in the forums to discuss these and Tony Yin, the primary artist.

I want to make more of them, therefore dibs on the other concept arts by this artist.
@Faiths_Guide I swear I didn't steal the "Lith-" syllable from you!
I really like the morph mechanic in general and I like your Lithlorians as well (but I think the first ability of the commander is too strong ... could be "face-down creatures you control get +1/+1" instead). I just don't get why they're all artifact creatures. And you're right, I didn't know this project until now.
"Whenever Dreamcatcher blocks a creature" *cough cough* ;P
Anyways... I've played Halo for a long long time. And it's fun. So... What does Magic the Gathering have anything to do with halo? Well... My favorite Halo species are the Grunts (Uggoy). And I've started a project to make cards of them.
I once made a contest for them: http://forums.mtgcardsmith.com/discussion/1757/make-me-a-grunt-from-halo-closed#latest.
But now... I made a set of them, all designed by me. One of them is actually my first card, which just happened to get onto WMTGCS: http://mtgcardsmith.com/user/TrippleBoggey3/sets/12227

Set is currently sitting at 41 entries (http://mtgcardsmith.com/account/sets/12943), mythos on request and I'm currently fielding ideas from the community
Themes (just in case):
-5 color tribe, though Bant color base for creature and mechanic design + flavor reasons,the exceptions being Vilewomps and Hybrid Womps, for example:
Snuffles, Outcast Vilewomp: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/snuffles-outcast-vilewomp?list=set&set=12943

Grislewomp: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/grislewomp-1?list=set&set=12943
- Large creature and counter focus, rely heavily on tribal synergy.
-"Toolbox" tribe.
- Large emphasis on flavor.
also, @Feyamius, love the set!
