  • @Feyamius Don't say I didn't warn you.

    The seaweed is always greener
    In somebody else's lake
    You dream about going up there
    But that is a big mistake
    Just look at the world around you
    Right here on the ocean floor
    Such wonderful things surround you
    What more is you lookin' for?

    ----

    Synergistic, toolbox-y, and I'm really not sure how to balance them, but all Coral have Defender, and then benefits when they become tapped. They take a stalling style, and can take massive turns involving tapping your opponents entire board with Great Spawning to also contribute to your own board or hand. Diving Expedition fills out the toolbox, and Anthozoic Garden and Dashtar, Deep-Reef Colony provide your main win conditions. It's down to earth, and it's a lifeform, just like you asked for!

    Under the sea...
    Under the sea...
  • I know it looks like I'm not taking this seriously by the way, but I really am just looking for more innovative, off-the-wall designs occupying unused mechanics space. Sorry for any confusion.
  • @Arensen I really like them. They literally are defender-merfolk. ;) Minor adjustment I'd recommend: Dashtar's first ability seems to be off-design. It could say "When Dashtar becomes tapped, coral creatures you control lose defender and assign combat damage equal to their toughness rather than their power until end of turn". The artwork is not really able to make believe that these critters can do anything, especially fighting, but I think finding something like this is highly unlikely. Therefor, I see those as a design draft in the sense of IF they WOULD become official magic cards, they'd get a redo with own artwork anyway. I think it's the best you could get. You could have put an art filter over the pictures so that they seem more drawn, but if you don't know how to do that already, it's way too much to ask to learn something like this just for a little cardsmith contest. ;)

    Long story short: Cool.
  • @Feyamius The problem with wording Dashtar's ability the way that you have, is it means that short of good finesse with Diving Expedition (or perhaps with certain other tapping abilities) it's functionally impossible to attack with him and the team in the same combat phase. This is both problematic and off-flavour for a lord who's designed to literally animate the entire colony (hence him being the Deep-Reef colony, rather than something like Deep-Reef Titan) and send the whole reef walkabout. I also don't think that an art filter would really change too much in terms of making it believable that they could start attacking people, but next time I have more time on my hands (currently revising for some major exams at the moment) I'll look into it!

    @Arensen "At the beginning of your combat phase, you may have coral creatures lose defender and assign combat damage equal to their toughness rather than their power until end of turn. Use this ability only if Dashtar has been tapped this turn."
  • Guardians, creatures that tend to be underpowered unless you control a 1/1 for them to 'guard':
    imageimage
  • Again, more a keyword than a creature type, don't you think?
  • Just three days left. C'mon, let the critters loose!
  • So, the last day began. Will there be more entries? Will there be a new species on the board being the fittest and surviving all others? Or will one of the already existing make the race, placing itself at the top of the food chain?

    We will witness.

    Ran out of time and never found art/inspiration to create another new type...

    So I present you "Young"!

    The Set:
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/user/Faiths_Guide/sets/10549

    The Discussion Page:
    http://forums.mtgcardsmith.com/discussion/1595/maturing-mythologies/p1

    The creature types design is to make my custom mechanic function:
    Mature (To mature this creature, exile it. If you do, search your library for a non-Young creature card that shares a creature type with it. You may cast it by paying the difference in mana costs between it and this creature. Then shuffle your library.)
  • Yep, I've seen this set before. It's so cool! :)
  • Welcome to the merchant class with their own new ability, Trade!

    Trade (Discard a card from your hand. Then, gain Coin artifact tokens equal to the combined mana cost of the card you discarded. You can only trade on your own turn.)

    First Card: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/knight-king-2
    Number two: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/traveling-necromancer
    Third: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/ghost-of-prosperity
    Final Card: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/goblin-sleazbag

    An instant to go with this: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/secret-bribe
  • An example of an "apparition" type ie dream. My first entry

  • Oh, some very last minute entries. Nice. ;)

    But now it's closed, I'll judge today.

    Okay, first, some short feedback:

    @Faiths_Guide — Lithorians
    I still don't get why these are artifact creatures, but I like morph and they have a great synergy.

    @FaithsGuide — Young
    Cool set. Not sure if it would be possible to make Young a keyword instead of a creature type. With the wording of Mature, probably not. It's a good solution this way, but not 100% "clean" concerning the definition of creature type, I think.

    @Mysterious_Gangsta — Apparition
    I kind of like the idea on Dreamsnatcher, but the wording and the mechanic itself seems broken to me. e.g. the second ability: you tap it for an effect and if the intended effect resolves, you untap it again? WTF? ;)
    Also, I don't really get what the speciality of the creature type is. This is why I recommended to make more than one on each type. Judged by the presented abilities, this seems more like a stand alone card to me, not a whole creature type.

    @X_Godborn_X — Withminius
    Same here. More a stand alone card than a blueprint for a whole creature type. You do even refer to the Horror type, so it could be anything and Horror itself. Maybe a Beast Horror? I can't recognize any need for a new creature type here.

    @TrippleBoggey3 — Ugoy
    I don't know ... they finally are a recognizable creature type, but there are some issues. On a superficial side, I don't really like the artwork. It's not very Magic-y I think. And you've written over the frame a lot. So they are just not very beautiful. On the mechanical side, e.g. why does the lord give covardice (and haste!) to Ugoy again, if every Ugoy has covardice (and haste!) anyway? The WTF is strong with those, too. (But I wrote about them before.)

    @Biblio2 — Alien & Addams
    No. Just no.

    @Monty — Womp
    Well, I really like these little buddies, the artwork is very well chosen (not really my style, but very fitting in this case and still nice to look at). They look different, it's not even the same artist overall, but you can see a similarity between each of them. Again, very well chosen. With the Womp counters, you provide great synergy, you're working on them for quite a while now and of course one can see this.

    @SubstituteHero — Symbiont
    Bestow-like equipment artifact creatures - what a great idea! Artwork is very well selected, too. They have only one major downside (*salute*): They don't have equip. Equipment that you can just equip once, i.e. if it enters the battlefield, is effectively just bestow again, ignoring the potencial of the new type you used it on. And it wouldn't be out of cencept either. Symbionts can do their thing multiple times, don't they?

    @DankSoulsRager — Roc
    I wrote about them before. Could just be birds. But they not bad anyway.

    @MtgSalvader — Tiarii
    Cool name for the type, though. The wording from Shrill is off. It doesn't care about the creature having Shrill at all: "Shrill (whenever you sacrifice a creature, you may pay {b}. If you do, deal one damage to target creature or planeswalker.)" When you sacrifice another creature, you can pay black mana, and you deal damage to another thing. No word about the card having Shrill itself. At least the creature with Shrill should do the damage ("If you do, this creature deals one damage to target creature or planeswalker").

    @Vlad-tepes — [nameless]
    Not a bad idea. Would have loved it seeing this more fleshed out. Finding artwork not being reminiscent of some creature type we know is very tricky here, but I think you did that very well. The wording is terrible, indeed.

    @ningyounk — Doll
    Cool to (finally) make a type out of those, but the downside of this is, that it's not very innovative. It's not your OWN NEW type. But just like I wrote before, I like the execution very much.

    @ningyounk — Party
    Like I said before, I think this would be better off as a keyword. Then you could even make some different parties (each with its own creature type), plotting against each other. ;) Would be really cool describing tribal wars mechanically with a party keyword like this.

    @Mila — Abominantion
    I wrote that before, too: That's not really new, there are abominations out there already, but just in their card name with horror as their type. Your card is abomination as a type and horror in its name. Well ...
    But the card itself seems nice and round. Nothing overwhelming or overly complicated, just a good card. I like it.

    @yousmelllikeapumpkin — Planeswalker
    You've asked: "Planeswalker as a creature type?" Nope. Sorry. Doesn't work for me.

    @Arensen — Silverware
    Funny. Very funny. ;)

    @Arensen — Coral
    Nice. I like them a lot. After some consideration even the artwork is growing on to me (just like a coral field). An art filter would still be nice on most of them, but it's okay the way it is.

    @strongbelieves — Guardian
    Again, more a keyword than a creature type.

    @seaspray4TF3 — Defector
    Despite being made for another contest, I like this one. A mechanic pushing Planeswalkers with loyality counters is a very good idea, but you have to be careful not making it overpowered. If you had to make a new creature type out of it? I'm not sure about that. Cool card anyway.

    @Fantastic_Fantasy_Cards — Merchant
    It's absolutely a type! I like the idea of the trade mechanic, but the execution is - sorry - horrible. And so is the artwork of the Knight King, too. ;) But the other artwork is pretty nice and I think with some rewording and reconsideration of the mechanic plus some balancing, this could become a really cool type. I think this has got much potencial.

    @dashdo101 — Borgo
    More an Unhinged thing, here. But not without some coolness. They obviously are a color cycle, they match perfectly, the artwork is fitting ... they aren't serious, but I like 'em.

    @ReddEnderman — Red Panda & Shadow
    If you want Red-Panda be one creature type, you have to write it exactly like this (with a hyphen). Would all Red-Pandas work with experience counters? I doubt that. But what's so special about them?
    Considering that, I like Shadow more. I suppose Echo 0 plus "if it dies"-ability is their thing? If it wasn't planned that way, you're lucky. ;)

    @JonNoTroll77 — Apparition & Cyborg
    I really can't say anything about apparition. It doesn't say anything to me, too. I guess, we're even then. ;)
    Cyborg are in no may Magic to me, I'm sorry. Zero flair.
  • Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. You might be right with abominations being horrors, that's why I didn't make more, baut good you liked it anyways.
  • JUDGMENT

    3rd: @Monty with the Womps. They are not made specifically for this contest, but I could not not honoring them at least 3rd place with a clean conscience.

    2nd: @SubstituteHero with the Symbionts. This is what I wanna see. A cool new twist, nice fitting Magic-al artwork, I would play them (if they had equip ability added on them).

    1st: @Arensen with the Corals. Yes, seriously. Nice set, nice synergy, obviously an own type. So there's only one thing left to say: "That's why it's hotter under the water, ya we in luck here down in the muck here, under the sea." Badababapbap badam bapbap.

    Honorable mentions:
    @Fantastic_Fantasy_Cards with the merchants. I would really love to see those guys after a complete workaround.
    @Vlad-tepes with creatures without any creature type. It takes some balls to send this in a challenge about creature types. ;) And I think you could do a lot of shenanigans with this.
    @Faiths_Guide 's Lithorians, of course.
  • Just going to clarify how Dreamsnatcher works. It taps, "making a creature go to sleep" (attack) then when it does, the Dreamsnatcher is ready to, well, snatch it's dreams.
  • edited September 2016
    Yes, but it's nonsense. You could just say "0: ability. Use only if this creature is untapped." Tapping and directly untapping again is .... well, nonsense. But just in my opinion, if you're good with it, so be it. ;)
  • Congrats @Winners and (other) @Mentionables! Thanks for the cool contest @Feyamius!
  • @Feyamius Thanks for the great contest!
    Any 3 of your choice from this 22 card set would be great :) http://mtgcardsmith.com/account/sets/13137
  • @Monty I've got a 404 there.
  • @Monty
    You must have been editing the set when you copied the link. Make sure you aren't for the link to work for the rest of us.
  • Nice challenge Feyamius! Congrats to ALL the winners and mentionables!

    Hey, first contest win! Things are looking up :)
    @Feyamius Thanks for creating it!

    That said, I've only got three cards in particular that I'd like favorited, but other than that if you just went through my recent stuff (only 41 cards total, hopefully not much) and picked out nice stuff, that's fine by me (although it's more work, so don't feel the requirement to).
