I agree with @Corwinnn. No card is perfect at first, but every is here to help you balance it. For me, at least, the problem with 1 mana cost planeswalkers is making them desirable. When I'm looking to play a planeswalker, I usually don't go for someone who just has a good + ability. It's all about the - abilities that make me want that walker. For example: Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, one of the most expensive walkers out there. She's expensive not just cause her +1 ability let's you keep an opponent's field down. She's not just expensive cause she has a huge card boost. And she's not expensive just because she gives you no maximum hand size and an infinite arsenal of spells. She's expensive because all of those work so well that you want to use all three abilities. I want to keep a player's field down so I can build to that ultimate, and if I'm at a huge card disadvantage, I can use her -2 ability to get right back in. I think that's the biggest difficulty in making great walkers. It's so difficult to get abilities that will have a meaningful impact on the game so much so that people want that ability. My only thing with your original walker was that for such a powerful first ability, the second and ultimate just seemed lackluster. Like, yeah, I want that early card advantage, but the other abilities weren't something that I'd go for. But you can easily make that into something more desirable. Sure, I'd love to pull a card out of my graveyard, but as an ultimate, I think that it's more desirable to keep that creature out there. Nahiri, the Harbinger has an ability that lets you take any creature from your deck and put it onto the battlefield. Fantastic. Then end of turn, you return it to your hand. And can cast that very creature next turn. Sure, I'll take a turn 6 Emrakul that I can keep and cast again a couple of turns later. I think it just needed a little tweaking
  • If you're going to make a 1cmc planeswalker, you have to understand that you are giving a player the ability to do something every turn at the cost of one mana. There is virtually no effect in the game you can let a player do every turn at the cost of one mana once.

Thanks for all your advice. I'll think of what to do with Elishbea with all that in mind :)

I think its ok if you compare it to cards like "Rancor"
  • @Mila, yeah sure thing, I don't see why not.
  • Seeing as I've been extremely inactive, here's something to make up for my absence.

  • there is only one creature in magic that could be an one mana planeswalker, but he would only planeswalk by accident. I can see him going to a market and acidentaly ending up in Dominaria: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/fblthp-acidental-walker
  • God this is going to be tough to judge.
  • Judging today!
  • 1. Fblthp, Acidental Walker by @mithandir91 - not because it's funny, this is legitimately the best card design in my eyes. It has virtually no flaws and it's designed in an incredibly flavorful, useful, balanced, and creative way.
    2. Gaz, Mindrot Noble by @monty - I liked all the static effects that a lot of the planeswalkers have. This one may be a little too tough in the right deck, but there have been countless cards that have been "too tough" and yet seen zero to minimal play. All effects are flavorful, the design isn't so useful overall that you'd put it in every black deck, but it's designed in a way were you can put it in many of them with the right synergy. The ultimate is the most well designed ultimate I've seen in the contest, clearly synergistic with itself.
    3. Atsika, Young Huntress by @Odysseus - The theme of each ability having a disadvantage allows this to be a 1 cmc walker were you can put abilities on it that aren't so weak that it would make whoever plays with the card feel bad. Each ability feels like a green/black ability aside from the ultimate, which is kind of red.
    4. Erion, Penguin Adventurer by @Teacup - Honestly, I'm just as surprised as some of you that this one isn't higher, it's a really solid card. It has creative and flavorful card advantage as well as being one of the most balanced designs here. The ultimate, even for 1 cmc, is pretty weak, which holds it back a little.
Message me any time to claim your rewards, congrats to everyone, these were creative entries and it was difficult deciding which was better!
(Also, I'm surprised there was no life gain walker white walker.)
  • Congrats @Winners! Thanks for the contest @Shagoth!
