Guys..awesome stuff, really. First off, @kltmtg29 , I love Alaster, however i don't think rebel should be an actual mechanic, rather than just an ability. In fact, I think Alaster is an awesome addition, as you managed to tie in both the monarch ability and an original concept, yet I still think rebel should not be a keyword. Do you have any lore for your character?
@Wackosaru I agree with @kltmtg29 on this one; it is a bit too OP, as this only costs two mana to play, and two to activate, making this a power engine. Now, I love the concept, and I really do think that this set needs more zombies, but the two main things I see wrong with this are formatting (simply looks bad, and you need to italicize Tempting Offer) and the power-level. But again, love the originality and thanks for the submission, again, you can switch this out with a remake, so it won't count as one of your submissions.
Also, PLEASE USE THE CARDSMITH SYMBOL!
As Always, - Really Tired and Pissed Mother Russia
Hey @TrippleBoggey3 , the conspiracy is really cool and really well worded, so thank you for the input. As it stands right now, Commanders and factions are my primary focus, yet conspiracies and planes and schemes can't be too far off! Again, thank you for all your input to this project, and I hope to see your creations soon!
As Always, -Slightly Less Tired and Pissed Mother Russia
Seraphin makes some interesting dynamics. Obviously, you can just delay your opponents and turn them against each other ("Vindicate Susan's Sol Ring? No, I think we'll let Susan decide where that goes.") but you can also use it to outright steal cards by exiling an opponent's bomb and trading it for a Brainstorm.
Obviously she attracts a fair bit of hate, as a floating counterspell, though she can protect herself fairly well with her ability. However, using her ability to absorb removal means giving whatever you'd previously stolen, and if you get double-barreled, exiling the second one is pointless, since it gives that player the first one back. As a sidenote, she can't do anything to activated abilities (though she could try to prevent them from landing in the first place) so that's a potential out.
Sorry to be so0 pernickety, but I would appreciate it if you could edit the discussion so it credited Two-Faced as my mechanic, since I did make it (Hover over the right side of the description and a gear symbol should appear. Click on that).
Im fairly terrible at writting. But i enjoyed writting trhis.
Senf was your average Elk. He never wanted for anything. He ate and he drank and he slept. Senf was happy. But then the humans came. They took away the trees. They took away the animals too. Humans are different from Elk. They want everything. They are never happy. Eventually the forest announced that it was dying. All the animals were in distress. The forest had always protected them and now it was leaving. The animals decided to act. The animals grouped at the tree line of the forest. When the humans came to take the wood they got scared and ran. But that night more came. A large pack of humans came to get through the wall and into the jungle. The animals were ready. Usually when they saw humans they ran immediately but not today. No matter how close the humans got they would not move. The humans didn't get any closer.
The first volley was the worst. The animals had arranged themselves in a line just in front of the first row of trees, very few protected by the branches. Senf was one of the lucky one's he stood behind the first line right behind his mother protected by the leaves and branches above him. The arrows lunged deep into the backs of many animals rolling them onto their sides. Most of the animals ran away from the forest hoping never to have to see humans again, the rest charged at the humans. All acted except Senf. Senf just stood there, standing over his mother's body. He didn't cry. He didn't feel anything. Then the trees started dying, turning brown and losing their leaves in a matter of seconds. Senf's gaze shifted from the ground to the sky. He could see the stars. Why had the forest abandoned the leaves and let the stars take their place. Then he saw it. He saw what the forest had seen. The animals that had charged the battlefield, although their numbers severely shrank by the humans bows were beating the humans. But they weren't animals anymore. They were fierce and ruthless, driven mad by the violence. Most of the animals in the forest had ran away giving up their natural home to fear, others gave up their nature to save their home. The forest was home to those who were one with nature. This forest was a home to no one, so it left.
Senf didn't decide to do this, it really just happened. He walked up to the battle and stood between his monster brothers who had conquered long ago, and the men who were being slaughtered. He stood between them and told them to stop. He told them the rage corrupting the animals had caused the forest to leave, and it wasn't coming back. At first nobody responded, then he felt it. The blood trickled down his back. Senf fell. He saw the humans with their weapons on the ground. Then he saw the stampeding horde as it passed over him. In the next second a lot happened. The forest grew back. It grew to where the animals had lined up. It grew further past where the humans had cut it down. The jungle trees twisted and tangled around the Monsters, suffocating them, removing the corrupted souls from their innocent bodies. The branches grew around Senf, cradling him in a cool but lively embrace.
The forest had only one animal to protect, but it was too late for Senf. As Senf died so did the forest. Senf felt his body leave him, it waved goodbye as it joined the soil. Senf looked around and saw infinite trees. He was confused until he heard the voice. It told him not to be afraid. That this was his reward. In the end the forest died with him and their spirits could be together forever. A blinding light then nothing. Senf was back on the battlefield. He could see the path the humans ran along to get back to town away from the devouring forest. But there was no forest. Senf struggled to stand, but realized he didn't need to struggle. His spirit was free from bodily restrictions. He rose to his feet and looked around. There was nothing. No elk, no dried up leaves, only wastes. The entire forest and everything it stood for was gone. No it wasn't gone. It was in him.
From that day on Senf devoted his life to protecting nature. Both inside and outside of the jungles. Senf has no hatred towards humans. It took some getting used to but eventually the humans got used to talking with Senf. Senf would explain that nature is valuable and needs to be protected. It is fragile and needs to be cherished. And that if you show nature compassion, it will show you gratitude.
Ok, several things..@KimJongMartin, I just edited the description on Page 1, and I ma really sorry for not mentioning you, I just couldn't find the author...I really do hope you can help out with the project though and will be glad to have you on the team.
Next, @DomriKade ... I just read the lore thing...and you mate, are a poet. I could literally imagine myself walking down the path in the Fellwood with theMystic watching over me as I passed through his territory. Mate, that was AMAZING 10/10 easily when regarding character lore! Just for anyone reading this comment, here you go, judge for yourself:
[Bardsong regarding the Fellwood] As you traverse this sullen grove, tread with light and cautious paces Linger not on erstwhile graces, lest the path become your grave. Feathers are not meant to guide, flick'ring lights are not your friend Enter not this dismal glen, hasten now away your stride. Legend tells of skulls and spells, a hermit of peculiar ilk A wafting tune pure sweet as milk, listen! You can hear it's knell. Truths belong but are not owned, should your fortune turn to shade Encount'ring Hjortur in the glade, always give but never loan.
Seek always your path to find, but aim to never see - Some will always shrouded be, sightless but not blind.
Amazing!
Next, to @Beeswax, Seraphim is an extremely interesting character, and I love her abilities, you are right, her trading system and unique style of gameplay can really be a threat in the commander game, and can lead to some very interesting deckbuilds especially from a pool of limited cards. One thing missing though is lore, and with that I would love to suggest something. So, I was thinking of making like a mini-faction centering around pulling stuff from exile. Maybe like B/W templars? Idk, but if you do start writing lore for her, maybe try to incorporate her into that. My one other concern is the title...The Schemstress? Really? But otherwise actually great job!
@Wackosaru ... how long have you been playing magic for and how long did it take you to make that card? Now I am not trying too be rude but there are several major things wrong with this. First: Common rarity. Second: The Friendly Forest? Really? So nothing more than just..Friendly Forest? Look at some better titles mate. Third: The ability is completely overpowered. Fourth No lore....
Like really, I love the idea, and I really am not trying to be rude, so please don't take this the wrong way, just...constructive criticism.
Next, GET ME MOAR CARDZ!!!
JK, but in all seriousness, I love the input, but I would really like us to focus on just the mythic commander aspect for now if possible. Also remember, not all politicians are humans, and not all humans are politicians...be original 'cause so far the input is just great, I really love the enthusiasm, and let's get this party on the road!!!
-I've been playing magic for quite a while 10ish years
-It took me about 30 min to make the card.
-I've only been smithing since last Friday.
-Missed the rarity, Ill fix that.
-I dont like the title either, Just wanted to get it out , and I would change the title once i thought of a good one. Ill change that.
-I'm terrible at balancing. Almost every card I like has been reposted multiple times balancing it. Ill try to figure out how to balance him without removing flavor (dont want to raise the cost that much either)
-Forgot they needed real lore. Expect Lore for both my entries soon
-Don't feel obligated to tell me that you love the idea for my cards. (not saying you don't) But if it is a bad card idea I would rather someone tell me... nicely
@Wackosaru , no I actually did really like the idea, just the card itself didn't quite represent it. Also, a pointer, if you want to make good cards, look at some actual mtg cards and attempt to just look at their style. Find good art, and most importantly, think this: "do you think this card is balanced enough and well made so that it can be put in a real set."
If you ever need more advice, just ask @Tomigon or @Beeswax or @Corwinnn or at @KimJongMartin , they've all been smithing longer than I have and probably know waaaaaaay more stuff about it, but just keep practicing, enter challenges like these, and you'll eventually get the hang of it.
@Therussian58 Generally, exile is used either as a place for reanimator-proof removal to put things or as a 'storage' zone (Suspend, Imprint, Cipher, etc). Cards that remove things from exile are iffy to print because they mess with all other cards that use the exile zone, which is a lot of them by now. The only one to do so (Pull From Eternity) was printed in Time Spiral, which was hardly a normal set. The Processors from Battle also did this, in a cost-paying way, but we don't talk about the second Zendikar block
@TheRussian58, Do you want more flavored cards? Cause that's my specialty! Commanders are good too, but I usually only like them flavored, so it might be harder.
Also, would you like to join my team (Elves) for the Pro-Team Contest #6?
Also, yes remember, you are the ones biudling this world, I am only laying down groundrules, the fluff and flavor is all up to you!
And Beeswax, thanks for informing me, and I AM starting to have doubts about that, so it might only be a few cards, but yes, storage zone sounds quite well, but keep in mid, it will only mess with the cards i THIS SET, as most cards in here will probably just be used in this format. Also, I've been thinking, and after the finish of this one, we can build new worlds, so if your commander wasn't featured in this one, you can just reamke it to the next one, we could also do flavored world such as Feudal Japan or such, but that is a giant gaol stretch, so yeah lets just keep it here for now.
I'm too tired to write up a backstory right now, maybe later. I can promise that it will be at least moderately interesting though.
As far as what kind of deck Kiera likes, it's pretty obvious she goes in a fairly standard UR instant/sorcery deck. The second ability is there to add a bit of political spice, but she's mainly a value engine.
First, @kltmtg29 , thanks for editing, and thanks for heeding my comments, love working with you...
Second, @MonsoonTheArtificer , great card, great value, great balancing, the only thing that's a bit off for me is the mana cost, (I would personally do 6 if I were you, I mean, you can cast a lightning bolt and then all of the sudden...BOOM! Worldfire! Boardwipe! 0 mana!) but otherwise its great. I am really looking forward to the lore on this one!
So Vakieh is the current leader of an Aven mercenary army living in the northern region of this plane. Soldiers coming from Vakieh's camp are highly prized throughout the world because of their high altitude combat capability and their immense battlefield intelligence. Noticing signs of unrest throughout the world, Vakieh decides to silently observe and maybe quietly stir up the mess even more so that his mercenaries can fight in all wars throughout this plane and bring him immense profit.
@Kinojitsu_Asahi ... Got to tell ya. I LOVE the sound of an aven mercenary comapny made of champions of the world. The lore is awesome and even greater is the art, however there is one tiny problem...Colors. B/W are usually the colors of law and order, and as you said yourself..."Vakieh decides to silently observe and maybe quietly stir up the mess even more so that his mercenaries can fight in all wars throughout this plane and bring him immense profit." Now, the silent observer part is indeed very B/W, but the stir up chaos is not at all blue OR white...so I just don't really know where that's gonna go. But yeah, just some pointers, love the idea, and even greater love the fact that he a bird...lit.
Also, Keep in mind that there will be quite some competition between you and the Yrivar set, ALSO featuring birds...so..just look at your options...again, love the idea, and keep on smithing!
@Therussian58 Well the lore can, and will always, be edited for improvement and evolve itself. Now while it's true that the term "stir up" is usually non W/U, but after me and my friend tested the WURG commander ("The Gay Agenda"), we came to the conclusion that WU is just as good at stirring stuff up as any other colors. But regardless, thanks for the advice!
Fixed a couple issues with the original's first ability, reworded the second ability to be not as clunky, and added an extra point of toughness. Now then, I suppose it's time for some backstory.
Many of the noble houses in the city (didn't catch a name yet) often host tournaments akin to those of days past. Attractions to these tourneys includes jousting, archery, fencing and other martial skills. Recently a new type of competition has begun to show itself: spellcasting. The houses have developed a set of rules and protections that allow for the safe practice- and dueling- of magic. Each family has begun to tutor its younger members in the art of spellcraft so that they may bring home the accolades that winning a tourney provides.
Kiera is one such young noble. The House of Fura has always been a more academic-focused house, being one of the premier patrons of more scholarly endeavors. With the introduction of the spellcasting duels, however, it has begun to take more interest in the tourneys. Kiera, sister of Fura's heir Corbin, has long stood in the shadow of her older brother and developed a more reclusive personality. She began practicing spellcraft in secret, surprising her instructors with her prowess when she was old enough to start training for the tourneys. She quickly surpassed her peers and won her first official duel at the young age of thirteen. Despite this, she remains a massive introvert with little social skills and is unlikely to be heading her house anytime soon- something she will leave to her brother gladly, as it gives her more freedom to practice her art.
Now then, enough tinkering with the card's design and let's get to work on a second entry.
@Therussian58 here you go! In Thriska, on the plane of Ankliga, there is a revolution. The country is rules by His Holiness Daimon Tybout, a corrupt aristocrat posing as a priest. His promises of salvation and paradise seem enticing, but there is a sinister truth. He has no powers of absolution or light. What he does have is ambition, ruthlessness, and a complete disregard for the lives of others. He is willing to sacrifice as many people as it takes for him to rule the entire plane of Ankliga. His religion, the Church of Varrus, gains momentum while he manipulates and destroys those who would oppose him. For him to be stopped, his evil machinations would have to be revealed. His false and duplicitous nature would have to be exposed. Alastar knows his secrets, having been a victim of this cruel system. He was once fooled by these falsehoods, and this made it hurt all the more when he uncovered the truth. However, he did not simply give up hope. Galvanized by his betrayal, he sought to make sure no others would have to go through such hardships. He is determined to expose Tybout, but his power is immense. To overthrow him, it would take a revolution. The people will no longer be used!

I will officially make new cards tomorrow.

His false and duplicitous nature would have to be exposed. Alastar knows his secrets, having been a victim of this cruel system. He was once fooled by these falsehoods, and this made it hurt all the more when he uncovered the truth. However, he did not simply give up hope. To overthrow him, it would take a revolution. The people will no longer be used!
