Cardsmith Inventors' Fair

This contest is a different contest than usual, each person will be the judge of another participant.
It will work like this:
- I will post my first card (invention) and then the next person will review and judge my card.
- The person judging will give it a rating from 1-10 (10 being the best) and giving an explanation on how it could be better (it doesn't have to be long).
-The person who judged my card will then post their ONE card (invention) in the same comment.
-Repeat! You will judge the card above you and post your own ONE invention.
-At the end, I will be the only person with a say on who wins, but the judging you guys did will be a lot of help!

Set MUST be Kaladesh, and be an artifact or artifact creature. This will end anytime based on entries after the end of the month.

Prizes will be awarded for their inventions: first (3 favorites on their choosing and entry), second (2 favorites on their choosing and entry), and third (1 favorite of their choice and their entry).

A bonus prize will be awarded to the person I think gave the best advice on another inventor's entry.

p.s. Make sure your invention is YOUR OWN. You cannot take another invention slap your name on it. I heard a guy got kicked out of Tolarian Community College for it.

LET THE CARDSMITH INVENTOR'S FAIR BEGIN!

Biomechanical Tiger is a very balanced card. However, being an invention I think that it should be costed as 2R instead of 3R. I also think that you should not have to discard cards because that is a very significant drawback. That all being said, however it does have amazing artwork and flavor text. It is very flexible and strong in many decks, particularly UR with card drawing spells. Overall rating: 8/10.

    Here is my submission: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/tome-of-eternities-1.

Note: I designed another version of this card, but it was too overpowered, so please note that this is not an old card I designed, it is specific to this contest.

    Here's a few thoughts @MultiverseExplorer:

First off, that Tome is bonkers good! It's a far better (one-sided) Dictate of Kruphix that is way easier to cast and merely reduces your hand size a little.

Also, as there are quite a few ways to have no max hand size, the draw back won't apply in many situations.

    It's essentially this: Thought Reflection.

Another thing is that you need to have "instead" at the end of the ability.

A possible way to make the card more fair:
If you would draw exactly one card except the first one you draw in each of your draw steps, draw two cards instead.

Basically, it needs to be much more restrained so as to be "somewhat" balanced.

Cool idea though! Needs some more flavor as well, IMO. Seems a bit random.
    Overall rating: 4/10

Chronodial is an interesting way to bring blink into any deck, in exchange for it being universal. It strikes me as being balanced, since it'll avoid priority arguments in wrath of God scenarios. Although while it may be a bit broken because of these field wipe situations, (exile all, wrath) it is indeed a flavor home run and something I could see happening, based on Kaladesh's flavor. All in all, fair and balanced card, and powerful flavor.

  • @Lujikul, keep in mind, you can only exile your dudes (you and your opponents) during your respective upkeeps. You cannot do it in response to a boardwipe etc.
  • @Faiths_Guide I'm aware of that. Nothing saying you can't preemptively do it if you're casting a sorcery speed one.
  • @Lujikul
Your card feels like it should be red. That is one of its major problems, magus of the wheel-like effects and islandwalk are both red (to me at least.) Your use of averages is interesting, and very variable, but I think it adds needless confusion. I honestly think that you should have taken away the creature abilities to make room for the crew reminder text.

    My card is coming
  • Nice inventions so far, thanks for entering!
  • @IanLowenthal
I like the idea on your card, but perhaps you should have the second ability be a "may" ability, considering it is an invention. Overall, 8.5/10.

Perhaps the only correct way to word something like that would be to say:
    Ignore all emblem's effects.

"Replace words" isn't what WotC would typically say. More likely they would specify that you "change text" similar to "overload". Perhaps they would say "loses"...

Other then that (as it seems you're aware), the card is very much a sideboard utility card and very often wouldn't do anything. In addition, WotC is very very hesitant to allow any direct interaction with the emblem card type.

The flavor is neat, and it's text is pretty acceptable too!

Everything considered, the card is still cool.
    Overall rating: 6/10

@Faiths_Guide Please make sure you choose one entry for the fair, thank you.

    @BradXmagic:
Oh... Didn't realize it was limited to 1...
    Chronodial's fine.
  • @Faiths_Guide
This is in the rules above:
-The person who judged my card will then post their ONE card (invention) in the same comment.
-Repeat! You will judge the card above you and post your own ONE invention.

I guess I could have tried to make it more clear
  • No, I just didn't read it carefully enough :D
  • @BradXmagic. So if I make one do I rate @Faiths_Guide's second one or the one before it?
  • That's what I am wondering as well... Thank you for asking @MaverickGV =P
  • @MaverickGV go ahead and rate Faiths_Guide's 2nd card. That card just won't be judged
    Then @Necromaster can rate yours

    @Faiths_Guide
    7.5/10
Your card has lots of flavor but if used correctly, may have too much value. Such as board clears, sacrifice another creature:benefit such as that
  • @Jchen5012
Heirloom of Garruk is really op for only 2 mana. It basically has at the begging of your upkeep pay {B} of you lose to life (which is almost nothing)
creatures you control have death touch
{t} destroy target creature (yes I know they fight which is one small draw back)

Overall you should have more of a draw back

  • Yay! Going well so far

Depending on if a specific card is used in another challenge or not, I have a classic card. Which has a nod to a memorable set! :)

    @BradXmagic
Edit: May I post a card within two challenges if uploaded them close to one another? I have an artifact that I would like to put here. But currently am considering it for The Team Kontest...

  • @mtgwizard9003
I like your card... Sphere of Silence! It reminds me of Gantz the anime.

It would be really funny if the triangle on the sphere was instead Bill Cipher even!

@modnation675 I am having trouble understanding what you mean, but I am fine with whatever you enter here as long as it has the Kaladesh symbol and fits the rest of the requirements above. So yes, go ahead and post the card here. And you need to give mtgwizard9003 a rating 1-10 please.
  • edited January 2017
    So... I'm just gonna enter...
@mtgwizard9003's card, Sphere of Silence, is really, really powerful. The fact that you could exile, let's say, a wild nacatl or a tarmagoyf against a zoo deck, and they just can't cast those again (Because, let's face it, most decks don't run artifact/enchantment removal). If it costed one more, it would probably be much fairer. Also, no offense, but it isn't very creative. 5/10
