Ascension Ability Challenge

Create an ability!

In this contest, you will be creating a ability for creatures to have, similar to "flying," "bestow," or "haste." The ability is called "ascension," and is supposed to be for a creature that either is stronger than it's normal counterparts, or can become stronger. Feel free to do whatever you want, as long as it's a useful and interesting ability! Make it cost some mana, or have to be tapped or sacrificed, or make it always there and prevalent! Do anything, as long as it's still an ability and is for creatures.

The prizes are as follows:
3rd: A follow (if I'm not already following you)
2nd: A follow (if I'm not already following you) and 5 likes of my choice
1st: A follow (if I'm not already following you) and 10 likes of your choice

The challenge will work like this:
You will design the ability. Be sure to try and make it useful, and not color, rarity, or creature type specific. If you are having the ability cost mana, the mana cost must be able to be changed for all different kinds of cards.
Next, create an example creature, showing off this ability. Be sure to include reminder text next the the "ascension" ability, and make one of the creature types be "ascended." If you can, include flavor text. If will be paying attention to and rewarding people who create the card to look as realistic as possible. Be sure to set the rarity icon to the Cardsmith icon. Try to name the creature creatively. Below is an example card, showing what the card could look like (please do not copy this card/ability):

After creating the card, post a comment explaining the ability and with a picture of the card.

Finally, have fun with it! Be as creative as possible, while still keeping to the theme of "ascension" and being/growing stronger.

I will wait for 15 entries, then the challenge will close and I will announce the winners.

Get going, have fun!

The idea for the flavor of the mechanic is that the creature is forgoing damage to raise up another creature, to ascend it, if you will.
  • @syntheticreign Ooh, that's a really cool and interesting mechanic!

    14 more entries!
  • Ascension (When this creature dies, you may return it to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. Then, you lose life equal to its toughness multiplied by two)

The idea behind this is similar to reincarnation--It has died while fulfilling its purpose, and it ascends to a higher plane. However, this rebirth comes with a price--more power at higher risk. The creature can come back any number of times, but you lose more life each time.
  • I'll make a card tomorrow.
  • @NokiSkaur Interesting, this could be really useful and also risky, prompting new strategies. Can't wait to see the card!

Not my best card but I spent time to make is so might as well post.
  • @brcien What does it mean to "become the monarch?"

I made this card, but I think, the wording is far from perfect. When having fond a better sollution, am I allowed to edit my entry?

  • @Mila Of course! By the way, I'm loving that ability, definitely something that would be fun to play with!

@Mila By the way, just in case you didn't notice or forgot, I would prefer if you were to put the creature type "ascended" before any others, so for example, yours might be "Ascended Elf." Thanks!
  • @Cyndi4U
It was a mechanic they had in the Conspiracy draft expansion. You could become the Monarch, and lots of cards gave you abilities either when you became it or while you were it.

@syntheticreign Oh, OK. I haven't really played a whole lot outside of tourny rules, so I'm glad you pointed this out to me.
  • @brcien @syntheticreign Oh, that's a really cool way to play! I had seen the Conspiracy boosters before, but I never knew what they were for until now. I'll have to try it sometime!
  • @Cyndi4U Yeah Ascension just made me think of "ascended to the throne" more than reaching Nirvana like most of the other entries seem to be doing. Some really cool abilities in this thread
  • 11 entries left!

Ascension N (When this creature enters the battlefield, put N ascension counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove one of these counters. If you can't, this creature ascends, permanently becoming an Ascended in addition to its other types)
With this ability ascension takes time; additionally, because Ascension does nothing in itself, ascending creatures will always have an ability related to their ascension.
  • @ASubtleGhost Ooh, you could use that card to turn the game around! I like it!

    10 more entries!
  • Ah, crap. I forget the image formatting part.
  • @sanjaya666 I'm sorry, I don't seem to follow. What do you mean?
  • edited June 2017
    @modnation675 Yes, that. Thanks.

    @Cyndi4U Nothing, bro. Not important.

    Deleted.

    Reasons I wouldn't enter:
    1. I have to use a "random" non-WotC creature type.
    2. I have to name a custom mechanic the same name that others would.
    3. Claustrophobia.

Keep in mind, this isn't meant to say that you made a poor contest! I actually think this is conceptually pretty neat! I think you're forcing people into to small a design space in addition to asking for the Ascended subtype (which I think a bad idea).

    Reasons I'd like to enter:
    1. I love to make custom mechanics.
    2. I love entering contests.
    3. This is a cool idea!

If there were fewer parameters regarding names etc. and the focus was more a mechanical aspect you wished to convey (as you actually did already to some extent), I'd enter.

Hope this is taken as it is meant, constructive criticism. I'm hoping to help your future contests be more popular!
  • @Faiths_Guide
Thank you for the constructive criticism! As this is my first contest, I would love to know more in case I decide to start another. Thank you for the tips!

I like the idea behind this, but I think the double toughness life loss is way too brutal. If you return it just once from your graveyard, you're losing 6 life for a 2/3 creature, that would only give your other creatures +1/+1.
  • @syntheticreign
It's six life for a 2/3 with flying and deathtouch. By the scale of Phyrexian Mana, this would be equal to 3 cmc. At uncommon, that can get you a 2/3 with flying, you could get the deathtouch at rare, and the Ascension passive pushes it higher. That's my logic, at least. It would probably be better at rare because the evergreen abilities go away after three cycles.
  • Hey, how about this?
