"Blindside" Custom Mechanic

Alright, let's try a mechanic like this:

Blindside: This creature can attack during your opponent's combat phase.

Your job is to create cards using this mechanic, in any way you see fit. As with my previous little experiment, there are no prizes aside from fairly liberal favorites for cards that I enjoy. Creativity, flavor, and an awesome factor are encouraged.

Here's an example on a card (I made it quite some time ago):

Ooo very nice. I like that stipulation that could be very powerful depending on circumstances.
  • Basically, if your opponent has more creatures than you, they are about to have a lot less...
  • If a creature attacks during another player's combat phase, can it also block during that same phase?
  • @Platypusburger
It can block if it doesn't attack. If you're attacking, you're declaring it as an attacker, and so it can not block. Standard combat rules apply, except that now you can attack as well as your opponent.
  • @Platypusburger
My assumption is generally no, unless the creature has vigilance, due to the fact that declaring attackers comes before declaring blockers.
  • @Lujikul , assuming it's untapped, of course. That was unclear of me, but I was referring specifically to a creature like Gelectrode's, with vigilance.

@syntheticreign , what makes you think that just because you declared it as an attacker that you can't also declare it as a blocker, assuming it's still untapped? When you break open the combat rules, these are the sort of things that come out.
  • Because both blocking and attacking tap a creature without vigilance. I'd say that a creature cannot both attack and block at the same time, by both the nature of the rules of the game and the reality of being unable to block and attack simultaneously.
  • Gosh this would be a rules mess. Turn player declares attackers, others declare attackers, turn player declares blockers, others declare blockers, then move to dmage.

I made the mechanic for creativity lol, I'll let the Wizards sort out the rules. Although it can't be more complicated than something like a Shadow of the Grave deck with turns that last FOREVER.
  • Yup, rules would die.
  • @syntheticreign , blocking does not tap creatures at all, so your out doesn't work there.
  • @Platypusburger
Oh that's right! I totally forgot haha. Although I'd still say that by the nature of attacking and blocking, you forego one for the other.
