    @Darkrahmir @DragonSage
I commented on your cards. Deadline is close so please hurry if you want to fix them!

It is a very difficult task to translate sound to drawings and text. Magic cards are many things. A symphony orchestra is not one of those things. However, one thing @Tomigon said was very intriguing to me.

"The focus of this contest supposed to be everything about music in MtG world. Wizard musician, magical song, cursed instruments, or anything that has something to do with music."

That got me thinking. What exactly does a musician look like in the MTG Multiverse? Whenever WOTC people design a new mechanic based on something from the real world or pop culture, they ask themselves: "what makes this thing tick." Dinosaurs are Angry. You embalm something once it dies. So then I thought, what makes a musician a musician? Someone just randomly banging keys on a piano or fiddling with a guitar isn't a musician. They're a person with an instrument. A musician, in my mind, is someone who practices their skills with an instrument. They rehearse to improve, so that when it's their turn to be in the spotlight, they will give the best performance they can.

    And then it hit me.

That's what I need to represent. The daily struggle to improve one's skill with whatever instrument they play. So, without further ado, I would like to present the Rehearse mechanic:

Rehearse (At the beginning of your upkeep, put a verse counter on this creature.)

This mechanic can be used to represent the improvement on one's musical skills. Verse counters are given context from card to card. I have made a cycle of 5 cards, one of each color, using this new mechanic.

    image
This is one of my two bottom-up designs for this project. I wanted to make a white card that had scaleable life gain based on the number of Verse counters on it. I really liked this Violinist art I found, and I thought it was a good fit for the card.

    image
The piano is my favorite Instrument. A piano can replicate almost any sound, with the sole exception of certain percussion sounds. A good pianist can attract a huge crowd. What I was trying to capture with this card was a pianist improving their skills, attracting more and more people, or in this case, bigger and bigger creatures.

    image
Rock 'N' Roll is one of my favorite musical genres. I though it would be fun to create a recursive 1 drop that cared about the verse counters for black. He will never let the party die!

    image
Do you know what goblins do? Smash Stuff! Something tells me that it wouldn't be too long before a goblin started smashing their instrument on other creatures (or players). I bet that they would have to start learning all over again if they constantly destroy their instruments and need to find new one. Hm.

    image
This was the first Rehearse card I designed. I wanted to show a band going from relative obscurity to fame and fortune. The first trigger represents a small trickle of revenue from album sales, the second trigger represents fans coming to see their idols, and the third trigger represents "going platinum" and becoming super wealthy.

I hope you all enjoy these cards as much as I do, and thanks again to @Tomigon for such a cool contest.

    Thanks,
    Kramp.
  • I am a bit surprised, tbh, but those were actually Kinda Kool, @KrampisZman.
  • @Faiths_Guide Thank you very much! That means a lot coming from you.

As with heads, two hands are better than one.

Would precombat main phase be better?
  • edited February 2018
@Faiths_Guide I don't quite know. The card is a bit weird, but I think it's fine... It does seem to be literally the best draw spell ever if I am reading it correctly.
  • @Tomigon why is that funny?
  • @KrampisZman
Ok, if sanjaya666's rehearse mechanic card wins, you get 1/4 point. How does that sound?
  • edited February 2018
Judgement has begun, no more entries please. Thanks to all participants! We have 68 amazing entries!
  • @Tomigon Sorry, the credit of rehearse mechanic goes to @KrampisZman of course.

(Note: What a silly crap of a rule for not using other people's mechanic. Do you even get a million dollars from that or what?)

    @sanjaya666
The rule doesn't say you can't use other people's mechanic. But I felt a bit sorry for KrampisZman after I saw your cards because I know why he posted his entries on the last day.
  • @Tomigon @sanjaya666 I'm sorry guys. That sounded childish and petty.

I had been holding on to these designs because, in this instance, I didn't want other people using my stuff without permission. I had been sitting on these designs since the second day of the contest. I really wanted to present something new to Tomigon. Something fresh. Something interesting. I even spent some time actually playtesting with these to get them correct. I went through a few iterations on almost all of these cards (Minus the band. I like how that played.), and I am really confident in what I have made.

It was like 2:00 AM when I wrote my previous post, I couldn't sleep so I just went on to MTGCS to see what was up. I was just a bit hurt that someone had used my new mechanic without asking, or favoring any of my cards with the mechanic, or even just, you know, giving credit in the card comments or on the forums.

To be fair, I was going to put this mechanic in the Mechanics Encyclopedia for ALL after this contest was over, because I really like this mechanic and I would like others to have the opportunity to make some cards with it. I just wanted to be the one to unveil my new creation that I put so much work into perfecting.

    TLDR
I spent alot of time on these cards and I didn't want anyone else using my ideas right away. That said, I was planning on eventually sharing the mechanic for everyone to use, and there was no harm done in @sanjaya666's cards. I was just a bit hurt that he didn't even credit me.

@Tomigon you don't need to give me 1/4 point if sanjaya666's rehearse mechanic cards win. I was just tired and overreacted to something, frankly, kind of silly.

^I like the concept. I saw you fix it many times and felt your passion!

    "Song of Spring" by @Teacup

^That “draw a card” is sparkling! I’m glad you added "basic" clause.

    "Blighted Siren" by @Animist

^Forcing attack + deathtouch is a nice idea!
    ---------------

    - 3rd place!
"Song of the Damned" by @Corwinnn

^Changing the type of counters creatures get is a very original idea. Music affects our emotions and changes how we feel about things around us. This card is a good interpretation of that!

    - 2nd place!!
"Song of the Maelstrom" by @sanjaya666

^Idea is very simple but I think it’s very flavorful and cool. It’s like the music draws magic out of air. I thought about the card power a lot(I still worried that it might be op), but considering that 5 colored deck has cheap ramp spells and card draw spells, I think it’s printable level. Very beautiful art work! Foil version of this would be awesome!

    - 1st place!!!
    "Enthralling Violinist" by @KrampisZman

^Before I started this contest, I asked myself: “What if spellcasters use musical instruments instead of their magic wands?” And when I see this card, I thought this is a good answer. As they getting good at playing instruments, the effect of their magic becomes more powerful. Very flavorful mechanic with plenty of room to expand upon the verse counters.
  • @Tomigon Wow, Thank you! This was a really fun contest, and I absolutely loved creating a new mechanic for it. I'll be Rehearse to the Mechanic Encyclopedia for All tomorrow in case anyone else wants to try their hand at making some rehearse cards. I still have a few ideas for them myself... :)

Congrats to the other @Winners and @Mentionables!
  • @Tomigon Many thanks, my dude.
