What do I need to do to make a challenge?

edited March 2018 in Off-topic Chat
Hey guys, I've never really participated in a challenge because I like to make stuff that's themed after movies and whatnot.

However, I have wanted to create a challenge of some kind. I posted a couple random threads like my Movie Monsters thread and that Enders thing. These, however, are endless and are not timed. I want to make a challenge that changes often.

Here's what I need to know before I do this...

1) Should I go for something that changes every day, every week, every month, or just whenever?
2) What kinds of rules should I have?
3) I see some challenges have rewards and stuff, but I have nothing to offer. I want this to be competitive, but entertaining and mentally stimulating. What should I do to provide some kind of motivation to keep you coming back?
4) I've learned the ins and outs of formatting on here, so how should I organize my discussion? Does neatness and presentation of what to do for my challenge matter?

All feedback helps. I don't want to create something disorganized or create challenges if nobody will participate.

Thanks,
James

  • Bro, all I know, is dont offer any physical prizes.
  • @Yro, if you do want to offer physical prizes in contests, I suggest PMing MTGCardsmith or @Corwinnn in advance to plan it all out. It just requires communication on both parts.
  • I'm relatively new at creating contests on here as well James. I am currently on my 3rd contest, deliver me slivers (though I am still running my 2nd contest, the owls are gathering, both are scheduled to come to an end on march 5th 8pm eastern standard time USA) if you want some ideas just browse all the cool contests people have been posting up. Since you came on here and said that movie monsters is your thing, you can make a contest on that! it'd be fun to do, just try to give it a little bit of uniqueness to you since you are hosting it, for example you can say why you want to run that type of a contest. rewards are favorites and you can 'gift' a premium to 1st place winners if you want (its $5 a month) my wife has done that for me twice so far, and my owls contest is the first time i will be gifting anyone a premium (im excited about it. the contest has had great entries!) I'm still learning as I go too James. Just gotta be creative and the rules and rewarding system on how you judge the entries is based on you unless you are running circuit challenges or redoing old challenges that have specific point awarding types. (for example, 50 points total, 10 for entering, 10 for art, 10 for artist name, 20 for balance of card. Of course this isn't realistic, i mean i guess it CAN be, but it's just a quick example to give you an idea of how you can judge cards). You can do what @Yro is doing and put a new contest up weekly, I like that idea. it keeps the forums busy and fresh with new stuff to do. But of course not everyone can keep up with all contests, so if you can't do that then you should post them to your own scheduling needs, that way you can manage your contests better. the last thing you want to do is abandon your own contest(s) because you couldn't judge them on time.

Hopefully this tidbit of advice helps. I'm going to go check your cards out if you got any! ttyl, Sorinjace
