Here's your original challenge: Create a creature with Persist (When this creature dies, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)

The aspect I intentionally made dynamic to be sort of like Goyf, but I like your idea of splitting them up too. It could be a neat uncommon cycle that encourages certain strategies.
