Hello everyone,

I recently did some video reviews of cards in the "Post your cards here. Actually see what others think." thread.
I had a lot of fun doing it, and was wondering if others would be interested in my video reviews. If so, please post your cards here and I will give them a thorough look and maybe some feedback. If not, ignore me and I will go away

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. I wanted to let the designs speak for themselves (at least as best they could) before giving any additional context.

Amplao, Realm of the Colossi is a big-creatures-matter set, somewhat in the vein of Rise of the Eldrazi. The set was designed as a mechanical study for a format where all of the colors were slanted into playing high-MV creatures, which is why Apex is in the set. As such, the set gets sort of "green-slanted" in that all the colors have access to traditionally green effects (such as the lands that can ramp themselves). The set was designed for every pack to have an MDFC that's Self-Ramping Land//6+MV creature. While playtesting of the set has been slow so far, namely in trying to get draft pods together, at least within the limited format the MDFCs have played mostly fine. They are a bit more pushed than their ZNR counterparts, with the idea being that that high-MV limits their flexibility, A lot of the most playable MDFCs were lower cost cards like Tangled Florahedron, Bala Ged Recovery, and Valakut Awakening, and the playable higher-MV ones all had much bigger effects that made them feel justifiable to run. The idea was to ensure players felt comfortable running these bigger creatures in their deck since they're such an important part of the limited format.

Awesome! Thanks! I'm glad you appreciated the more bold mechanical push.

Bafflem is an experimental set designed around unique mechanical pushes and bold "what ifs" of magic design. It was originally concepted as a "what if" for a six color environment, and grew to be a set to test out strange and interesting mechanics in general. The mechanical backbone of Bafflem is the playtest cards from Mystery Booster Convention Edition, and if you've never seen those I highly recommend you check them out.

Purple as a color has a lot more development on the backend than I could portray in just a few cards here. If you're interested in learning fully what's involved in the color, I recommend checking out 2:05 - 13:30 of this video

I appreciate the additional information and thought behind purple, but unfortunately my opinion still stands on it. I don't think magic needs another color, and most purple cards are basically blue cards, as stated in the video. It feels like it's basically made to "nerf blue," which has pretty much already been done. Blue hasn't been dominant in quite a while (excluding older formats, of course). In fact, most blue decks that have seen lots of play have been blue/green, mostly because green has been incredibly powerful lately.

Bafflem was designed in 2019 and released in 2020, when blue was at its most dominant as a color. Nowadays, the "most overdominating color" has shifted to green, and R&D has put a lot of mechanical push and refinement into streamlining blue to a more cohesive and direct identity, while finding space for less prominent colors like white.

I do agree that magic does not need another color. Bafflem was a set of "what ifs" and a "safe space" to try a mechanic push like that. It wasn't designed to interact with any of my other sets, nor any canon set, and I'm glad I designed the color, as it was cool to design with. However, Magic's color pie is nearly perfect as-is. Yes there are some pie imbalances, but there has been a lot of push and effort lately into rectifying that and smoothing all the colors to roughly the same level of power in the majority of formats. Each color already has so many mechanics and flavorful space to it, that there isn't a need for that sixth color of space. It's certainly interesting and exciting, but the only way for purple to fill its identity was to take and share space with other colors.
