Where Do You Find Card Inspiration?

Hello fellow Cardsmiths! I was curious on where you guys all find your inspirations to make all these great cards if you all are willing to share.

Me personally I find inspiration by simply going through Scryfall, and clicking on random, I usually do this in the background when I'm watching a YouTube video. I find so many abandoned mechanics and underutilized designs this way and it allows me to make something new, but usually it ends up a bit uninspired lol.

I don't know how common my way is, and I'm honestly curious how you all find your own inspirations!

At first — movies and characters and stuff
    then — gatherer random
last year or so — chat gpt
occasionally — just get hit with the idea
  • For me it's just when I get hit with an idea \_('_')_/
  • From a card that exists, but missed the mark!
  • Encountering a rule that I want to break or seeing a theme among cards that I want to bend to a player's advantage.
  • Sometimes i find card inspiration from existing sets, or based around movies, video games, and tv shows I enjoy. Sometimes I also just want to make a dragon.
  • DRAGONS MUST BE MADE!

    Yes… BEHOLD THEIR MIGHT!

    I await... the MERDRAGON!
  • I myself usually find inspiration from RPG, so I thought I made the RPG trying to inspire people to create cards like I did.
  • RPG is an excellent way to find inspiration! The Mystery Boxes are also an incredible tool for inspiration, because it gives you the basics, then you have to make it come to life, and that's always fun!
  • @Corwinnn that's great! For years, I've actually wondered if people do the Mystery Boxes for inspiration or out of boredom. As it turns out, I find that the two go hand in hand... nobody should be bored when you can create hundreds of cards!

I try to take the things that inspire me and give them out to everyone but in a way that will inspire them! -

The ideas in this discussion alone are great research, and I'll look to implement them into the Mystery Box Challenges!
