Belan, the Far Away- Custom set idea (If you want to help, you can.)

edited August 2020 in Custom Card Sets

Belan, the Far Away is a set that takes place on the plane of Belan which is hidden away in a very distant part of the multiverse. Planeswalkers are few as Belan is far away from any other planes. There are three main places that are showcased: The lush forests of Bakela where there are lots of wildlife live and herbs grow; The demonic ruins of Sejakal where sadistic monks and servants sacrifice creatures and objects to higher deities; And the palaces of Tatakai that are located atop a row of giant mountains where wizards and mages practice spells and mystic arts. There are three deities that are worshipped and each has one of those places named after them: Bakela; Tatakai; And Sejakal (each of which will have a card of there own).

  • You could do a undead revolt. When the undead overthrow their masters. I can write up something.
  • I get an immediate sense that Altar tokens might need some reworking or something. They're heavily color-locked (all the things that make them are basically going to have to have black on them) and I suspect that they'd also be a pain to design a set's worth of cards for (because you want them to not just be a worthless mechanic that either gets forgotten or only appears on, like, two cards, but you really want to avoid them making creature-based gameplay hellish if you're playing against black, especially in limited). I know you've got a focus on instant and sorcery spells down, but you've got to remember that creatures will always be integral to some gameplay aspects.
  • @MemoryHead, @shadow123, the set is graveyard themed too and I fixed them to be better suited for the graveyard mechanics.
  • @Grimaldus, that sounds cool. That does suite the grave theme.
  • The effect for Rubble is already called Ferocious in mtg

Also, if this is a graveyard themed set, I highly discourage the use of a graveyard hate mechanic.
  • Now, I definitely like Altars more!

  • @shadow123, does this look good for Sejakal. I went with the graveyard theme for him.
  • Yeah. That works!

Also, if you’re using altar tokens and having a graveyard theme, you’re going to need to find ways to bend the color pie so graveyard stuff can fit within the colors that don’t care about the graveyard as much (white and red).
  • Hmmm...that seems more blue to me. You’d have to think of what white and/or red’s values are and try to see how the graveyard could align with them.
